We are the largest research center within ABB with world class expertise and state-of-the-art resources to support innovation in the areas of both power technology and automation. Our multicultural research center consists of approximately 250 scientists from 45 different countries. Corporate Research is a good platform for further development of your career within ABB.

Tasks

Increasing amount of renewable energy sources in the modern power grid increase the demands on the controllability of power system stability and load transfer capability in the existing power grids. Also, the short circuit level has been changed due to the introduction of power electronic devices such as converters or Facts devices. It is therefore necessary to reconsider the protection strategy and scheme based on the new system structures.

As a researcher with us, you will be involved in technology development projects in the area of power system protection with focus on developing solutions to the next generation of power system protection. The tasks are focused on the short circuit analysis for the renewable systems with different types of sources such as wind generators (wind farms) connected to the power grids. The short circuit analysis will cover all shunt fault conditions such as phase to phase faults and phase to ground faults.

Qualifications

You are expected to create and execute research and development projects in a cross disciplinary and international environment. As a part of ABB Corporate Research you will work with dynamic, motivating and creative teams with a wide range of experience and competence with access to highly advanced laboratory facilities.

You shall demonstrate the ability of challenging existing design and engineering practices. More specifically, a candidate from electrical engineering is considered as a suitable researcher. Circuit theory and simulation tools such as PSCAD is a prerequisite. Necessary background knowledge for the work includes power system operation and transient fault analysis, and basic understanding in power system protection.

Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is a prerequisite while Swedish skills are advantageous. It is of equal importance that you are a driven person who own initiatives and creativity to deliver high quality results in the projects. Last but not least, you have a strong interest in technology and operational development.
