Malmö University is an innovative, urban and international institute of higher education, located in the centre of Malmö. We have around 1,800 employees and 24,000 students. Our research and education are characterised by the role we believe a university should play in an open society - to contribute to sustainability and equality in a scientifically grounded way with external partners and stakeholders. Identifying and addressing the challenges of the future are of highest priority. Our researchers and students work collaboratively to create, share and spread knowledge in order to understand, explain and develop society - both locally and globally.
The Faculty of Health and Society
The education and research activities at the Faculty contribute with the knowledge useful to preserve, support and promote people's physical, psychological, and social health. Research is taking place in areas ranging from science in technology and medicine to social science. At the interfaces between them, exciting new areas for research are being generated. The research at the faculty is also linked to the research center Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces which combines biomedical science with clinical and translational research in medical, dental, food and environmental application areas in close collaboration with regional industry.
Department of Biomedical science
The Department of Biomedical Science offers a programme leading to a professional qualification, Biomedical Scientist (first cycle, 180 credits), and a Masters' programme, Biomedical Surface Science (second cycle, 120 credits), as well as first and second cycle freestanding courses. The Department negotiates the multifaceted intersection between biology, chemistry, medicine, physics, and technology and the interdisciplinary approach to research and education aims to further the theoretical and practical understanding of the complex subject matter. Drawing on the balance between pure and applied research, the Department has been successful in attracting funding from regional, national, and international research funding bodies. In addition, in the pursuit of possible applications, several industry funded contract research projects are currently running at the Department.
About the position
The topic of the research project is to perform complex multi-parameter (both invasive and non-invasive) analysis of volunteers using commercially available devices, including wearables and medically certified blood analysers, as well as newly designed devices developed during the implementation of the current project. Thus, the technological objective of the project is to design and test an entirely new class of biodevices - non-invasive multi-parameter medical gadgets for fitness and health status monitoring. In spite of the ambitious technical objective, the project is fundamentally oriented, focused on the complex important scientific question, i.e. possible interrelationships between concentration/presence of bioanalytes/biomarkers and fitness and health status/advancement of disease. To accomplish the scientific goals of the project, big data sets will be collected and mathematically analysed using advanced computing systems and artificial intelligence.
Required qualifications and critical assessment of the applicants
As an applicant, you must have a Bachelor or Master Degree in Biomedical Laboratory Science, which qualifies the graduate to be authorised to work as Biomedical Laboratory Technologists.
In ranking the applicants, particular emphasis will be put on knowledge in biomedical analysis, practical experience in wearable technology, and understanding of advance biomedical analysis and technology. Previous experience in multi-parameter analysis of volunteers and/or patients is highly valued. In addition, adequate knowledge of English is required. Swedish language skills are not required, however.
