In this expert role as Principal Scientist you will play a meaningful part in our Translational Genomics department within the Discovery Sciences organisation. You will be based in Gothenburg, Sweden, contributing to the strategic build of our departments Target Validation capabilities. Leading drug projects and working alongside disease areas specialists to bring Target Validation understanding that will power the development of new medicines for Cardiovascular, Metabolic, Renal and Respiratory diseases.

Using your strong interpersonal skills, extensive scientific knowledge and great in vivo and cell biology expertise, you will deliver innovative target validation data packages from physiologically relevant cellular and animal models across different disease areas.

What you'll do:
In this role you will combine your in vivo and cell biology scientific expertise with strong project leadership qualities to deliver high quality strategies, innovations and data-driven knowledge that will push the boundaries of science. You will plan, design and analyze data from experiments to generate high quality results to support project decisions and breakthroughs. As well as oversee internal and external processes and standards that guarantees the compliance of our work.

Other important accountabilities;

* Expand and lead our Target Validation strategies, delivering scientific innovation and a portfolio of projects.
* Provide direction through strong alignment and engagement with the department's members and leadership team, senior leaders, and key stakeholders in the therapy areas and functions.
* Identify and develop external collaborations with industrial and academic partners from the target validation field.
* Develop our leading scientists to build world class capabilities for Target Validation that accelerate AstraZeneca's ambitions.

Essential for the role
This role requires a truly strong scientific and innovative drive together with great expertise in in vitro and in vivo Target Validation, demonstrable experience in target discovery, target validation and mechanistic biology studies combined with a strong strategic and collaborative profile. You should also have:

* Ph.D. in Physiology/Cell Biology or equivalent with extensive industry or academia experience.
* A track record of leading mechanistic target biology studies in Cardiovascular, Metabolic, Renal and/or Respiratory disease areas.
* Proven scientific impact and innovation through a strong publication record.
* Experience with using bioinformatics platforms to inform target validation approaches.
* A strong collaborative track record with experience in leading interactions with industrial and academic partners.

We also see you as a great communicator and a strong teammate, as this role requires a high degree of collaboration both within the Translational Genomics department, with other therapy areas and functions and with internal and external collaborators.

Desirable for the role

* Expertise in molecular biology techniques including Genome Editing and NGS. applications including single cell RNAseq.
* Experienced in the generation of transgenic animal models.
