The institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, the department of Physiology, at the Sahlgrenska Academy invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position. The research project is place at the unit for circulation and the postdoctoral researcher will be at part of a project that focus on type 2 diabetes (T2D) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
Subject area
Physiology
Specific subject description
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is undoubtedly one of the most challenging health problems in the 21st century and is now epidemic. With obesity becoming more prevalent in pregnant women, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a growing health concern. The metabolic demands of pregnancy can reveal a predisposition for T2D, ~30 % within 5 years postpartum. However, no appropriate follow-up programs or biomarkers/risk factors exist to identify women at high risk for T2D. We propose to study the mechanisms/risk factors and if there is a specific metabolic pattern in insulin resistant individuals and those in risk for developing T2D.
Job assignments
The service includes research aimed to examine the role of insulin resistance, insulin secretion and metabolic pattern that predicts the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but also gestational diabetes (GDM) in women, and the risk of developing diabetes after pregnancy. The aim of the project is to study these individuals using survey methods including to determine insulin sensitivity, hormonal status and body assembly with a view to identifying those individuals at risk before the onset of T2D. The role as postdoctoral researcher in the project includes both private research components but also a coordinating role.
Eligibility
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.
Assessment
A PhD in medical science is required, preferably in the fields of diabetes and obesity. Because the position involves contact with patients, for example through meetings and interviews, knowledge in Swedish is required (high knowledge in speech and writing). The role as postdoctoral researcher includes coordinating and the successful candidate should therefor have god organizational skills, independence, accuracy and stress resistance. Ability and previous experience in supervising students is a plus.
