The position as Post-doc is within the Future Energy Center. The challenges due to the energy related emissions, increased energy demand and the fragile state of the global economy calls for rethinking global energy systems. Therefore, the research within the Future Energy Center focuses on renewable energy, energy efficiency and emission mitigation, as well as smarter modelling, optimization and management.

The Future Energy Center is one of Sweden's strongest environments in process optimization targeting the process industry and the energy sector. We develop innovative solutions and tools within the areas of energy, building and environmental engineering.

The Future Energy Center has good relationships with both companies and recognized national and international centers, including several Chinese universities. The profile comprises nine professors, a further fifteen senior researchers and more than forty graduate students.

Position description
The position as Post-doc includes research within the research project, 'Pilot Feasibility of Renewable Energy Integrated with Energy Storage in Buildings (FREE)'. The project includes the following five main topics: integration of energy storage and priority selection of type of storage technology (battery, hot water, hydrogen, phase change materials, and building thermal inertia); and, development of control strategies for photovoltaic systems equipped with different storage technologies, and combined with different heating and cooling options. The project is funded by the Swedish Knowledge foundation and it is conducted in collaboration with five industrial partners: Castellum AB, Eskilstuna Energi och Miljö AB, Mälarenergi AB, Solkompaniet AB, and Flowocean AB.

The position is to develop a building management system to optimize energy use and conversion in buildings integrated with renewable energies and multi energy storage systems. The candidate will propose advanced energy management solutions for buildings integrated with renewable energies, energy storage systems and electric vehicles. The energy management solutions will be embedded into a hardware prototype for energy management in buildings considering also data visualization.

The energy management solutions should take into account synergies among different energy networks in the buildings. Specific tasks are:

• Develop a fully monitoring system to be used for building energy management purposes;
• Developed energy management strategies for buildings considering:

• Load and weather forecasting
• Controllable loads
• Building thermal inertia
• Battery operational strategies (peak shaving, photovoltaic self-consumption)
• Synergies among energy networks (i.e., power-to-heat-power-to-gas, power-to-water, etc.)
• Seasonal storage

• Development of the control system, both software and hardware
• Development of the visualization platform.

Qualifications requirements
The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in electrical engineering. Experience working on the development of energy control strategies and energy management devices is a strong merit.

To be qualified for the appointment, the applicant must have demonstrated strong motivation for research, good verbal and written communication skills in English and the ability to disseminate research findings.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organisation.

Assessment criteria
In general terms the assessment criteria shall be based on the ability to cooperate as well as the ability and suitability otherwise required to fulfil the duties well.

With regard to the nature of this merit-rated employment, the applicant's academic and teaching merits will be assessed above all in respect of quality. A quantitative precedent of an applicant, which can be explained by the applicant having worked for a longer period, will therefore not be decisive.

Merit
Merit is:

• An interest to apply academic knowledge and to do research in cooperation with international partners as well as experience from working in international research projects that involve achieving both academic and industrial or governmental related goals
• A background that closely relates to one or more of the project main goals will be a strong merit. The applicant should in the application explain how his/her competence matches these goals.
