Are you passionate about sustainable biotechnology and ready to tackle one of today's biggest environmental challenges? Join our dynamic and interdisciplinary team at Chalmers University of Technology to pioneer the next generation of biorefineries using marine and terrestrial biomass.

This postdoctoral position offers the opportunity to develop innovative green processes for transforming abundant side streams into high-value bio-based materials, contributing directly to the circular bioeconomy. You'll work with cutting-edge bioprocessing tools, collaborate with leading European partners, and have the freedom to explore your ideas in a highly supportive research environment

About the research project
At the Division of Industrial Biotechnology (IndBio), in the research group led by Assistant Professor Amparo Jiménez Quero, you will work in a vibrant, multidisciplinary, and multicultural environment. The group has strong expertise across the biomass valorization chain-from enzymatic and microbial degradation to the molecular characterization of biomass polymers and their conversion into functional materials.

As part of your role, you will also contribute to a Horizon Europe project focused on the valorization of marine side streams, collaborating with leading academic and industrial partners across Europe to unlock the potential of underutilized marine biomass for sustainable material innovation. Moreover, you will be supported by the Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC), a leading research center striving for scientific excellence with a focus on developing new materials from trees. The center generates cutting-edge knowledge and builds competencies to support an innovative and sustainable future rooted in forest-based raw materials.

The IndBio division and WWSC offer extensive infrastructure and facilities that are highly aligned with the goals of the project.

Who we are looking for
We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

• To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a PhD degree in Biotechnolgy, Material Science, Polymer Technology or similar, awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline.*
• You will need experience and high developed skills in in-depth biomass characterization, biomaterial characterization and application. Experience in glycomic analysis is highly recommended.
• Laboratory experience in biomass transformation in materials and water based extractions is meritorious but most importantly a good track record of experience in multidisciplinary work.
• The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
• You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

• The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service.

What you will do

• As a postdoctoral researcher, your main responsibility will be to focus on your research project. This includes planning and conducting experiments, as well as evaluating the scientific results.
• You will be expected to present your findings in various settings, such as group and division meetings at Chalmers, project meetings, and organized workshops.
• Scientific writing will be a key part of your role, including preparing articles for publication in high-impact journals and presenting your work at international conferences.
• In addition, you will be involved in the co-supervision of master and PhD students and in the participation of research activities within the group.
