Join us in pioneering a novel research field harnessing reactive water nanodroplets to combat greenhouse gas emissions. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to develop innovative computational methods for interfacing nanodroplets with catalytic particles. This work aims to enable the conversion of methane and nitrous oxide-potent greenhouse gases-into benign and value-added products. Collaborate with experts across disciplines, drive innovation in sustainability, and push the boundaries of computational catalysis.

Project overview

Reducing atmospheric levels of methane and nitrous oxide, two of the most potent greenhouse gases, is critical for mitigating global warming. However, their chemical inertness poses a significant challenge to natural decomposition and existing abatement technologies.

This project explores the enhanced reactivity at the surfaces of small water nano- and microdroplets to decompose these gases effectively. Combining quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, and machine learning, we aim to:

• Uncover and rationalize the reactivity mechanisms of nanodroplets.
• Optimize the chemical properties of droplets through solvent engineering.
• Explore synergies with heterogeneous catalysis to boost conversion rates.
• Investigate pathways for producing value-added products such as liquid fuels or commodity chemicals.

This research offers a unique opportunity to advance our understanding of catalytic processes and contribute to solutions for a more sustainable future.

You will join the Stenlid Lab at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, where we tackle fundamental questions in surface- and electrochemistry. Our mission is to design materials for (electro)catalytic and energy storage applications, contributing to a sustainable society.

As a member of the lab, you will work with a wide array of computational methodologies, including material characterization, machine learning, high-throughput techniques, and ab initio calculations of (electro)chemical reaction kinetics.

The position is part of Chalmers Area of Advance in Energy and includes multidisciplinary collaborations where research visits to national and international research groups are encouraged. Research visits to leading national and international research groups are strongly encouraged to enrich your experience and broaden your academic network.

Major responsibilities

Your key responsibilities include:

• Conducting independent research in collaboration with group members and external partners.
• Mentoring and supporting PhD students working on related projects.
• Developing and disseminating research findings through scientific publications and presentations.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have:

• A PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field, awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline.
• A strong background in quantum chemistry or molecular dynamics.
• Documented experience in programming.
• A keen interest in atomistic modeling of chemical reactions at material surfaces and in aqueous solutions.
• Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.

Contract terms

This is a full-time, temporary position with a duration of two years.
