Department of Energy and Technology
At the Department of Energy and Technology, research and education are conducted focusing on how agriculture can contribute to a sustainable society. We have extensive expertise in technology and systems for sustainable production of food and bioenergy, including optimal nutrition circuits and logistics systems. Within the field of methodology we have extensive competence in System Analysis including Environmental Systems Analysis and LCA, as well as Biometrics (statistics and mathematics with applications in biological systems) and Automation.

Duties:

We are looking for a post doc to strengthen our research on sustainability assessments of technologies for resource-recovery from urban organic waste, i.e. wastewater fractions and organic solid waste. We are particularly interested in sustainability assessments, e.g. life cycle assessment, cost-benefit analysis and technological innovation studies of systems designed for the recovery of nutrients from wastewater.

The post doc will play a key role in an on-going project that is exploring the technical and societal readiness of nutrient-recovery systems from wastewater. The aim of this project is to explore opportunities for scaling-up alternative systems for nutrient-recovery from wastewater. There is a growing shift in the sanitation sector towards more resource-recovery. Part of this changing paradigm is recognition that source-separation of wastewater flows, e.g. separate urine, blackwater and greywater collection, increases treatment efficiency and reduces contamination from hazardous chemicals compared to traditional sludge processes. There is a growing number of nutrient-recovery technologies available, but a majority are still in the formative phase of development and not widely applied. Further research is needed to quantify the potential advantages and disadvantages of nutrient-recovery technologies. This information will be critical formulating communication messages regarding these technologies and identifying areas are further improvement.

Potential studies of interest are for instance:

• Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools to gauge the performance of technical systems against environmental sustainability goals
• Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA), including a range of socio-economic costs and benefits, as well as quantifying environmental impacts
• Technology Innovation System (TIS) methodology which is a tool for identifying system weaknesses and opportunities within a process of innovation development
• Multi-criteria sustainability assessments, including both qualitative and quantitative factors

The final project description will be developed together with the project leader. The post doc will be part of an active, expanding and international research group focused on environmental engineering. We expect the post-doc to be present at the department most workdays of the week.

Qualifications:

The candidate should have a PhD in technology or engineering, which clearly connects to waste/wastewater management or resource-recovery. The applicant must have excellent English skills, both written and oral, which should be evident in peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations. In the assessments of candidates we will focus especially on theoretical skills, experience with sustainability assessments, experience with studies regarding management of urban waste flows, and the candidate's experience of publishing academic work individually and as part of a team. We will also evaluate the candidate's motivation, and capacity to collaborate with our interdisciplinary team.

The position is intended for a junior researcher and we are primarily looking for people who have completed a doctorate a maximum of three years ago.

The application should contain:

• Cover letter describing yourself, your motivation for applying for the position, including a short description of what you want to focus on during the post doc position, and why (maximum 2 A4 pages);
• CV describing your education, publications, relevant work experience, etc.;
• Contact information for two references;
• Copy of your PhD certificate;
• Academic publications of relevance for the position.
