VIPP (Volvo Industrial PhD Program) Unsteady Aerodynamics & its influence in Vehicle Stability

At Research & Development you will be a key contributor to the next generation of outstanding luxury cars from Volvo. Together with other engineers around the world, you and your team will create innovative human-centric car technology that makes life less complicated and more enjoyable for people. Are you interested in design and connected car technology? Do you share our passion for people, the environment and our urge to create a superior driving experience? Research and Development is the place for you to prosper.

The Aerodynamics section within the Environment & Fluid Dynamics department is a part of the Complete Vehicle organisation at Research & Development (R&D). At Aerodynamics we work closely together with Product Design and many engineering departments to development the vehicle exterior as well as components and systems for efficient energy use in the vehicle to ensure class-leading fuel economy and stable driving dynamics. We work with advanced research, the pre-project phases and project development to ensure our future competitiveness and competence

Project Description:
The flow around a vehicle is very complex due to the presence of three-dimensional, unsteady flow structures that can be linked to regions prone to separation. A better understanding of how these time-dependent structures are affected by the general shape of the vehicle will help to reduce their impact on the aerodynamic forces. The increased knowledge can be directly coupled to an improved lift distribution over the vehicle and hence stability, which would be the main focus of the research. The improved insight in the formation of these structures will also aid to reduce the associated energy losses. The effectiveness of the vehicle's rear end shape or add-on devices can be used to optimise the wake shape for drag reduction, while stability is maintained. The work will result in a licentiate and doctoral thesis at Chalmers. One or two Master thesis projects will be carried out as support. Results will be published in international conferences, scientific journals, and relevant forums.

Project target:
The objective of the project is to further develop competence and methods connected to aerodynamic optimisation of road vehicles. Specifically, it will create new knowledge and develop virtual and physical methods for objectively setting targets for, measuring, and verifying aerodynamic stability of road vehicles. This will support developing safer, more comfortable, and more energy efficient vehicles at a lower cost. The results of the projects will be strategically important corner stones for a competitive Swedish vehicles industry.
