Our project aims to develop a methodology to design energy systems that can withstand unforeseen events such as extreme weather, technical problems, and political shocks. We work in a interdisciplinary way using quantitative tools and models to analyze policy relevant aspects the energy system. The successful candidate will have have access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources, as well as a supportive and collaborative research environment. You will have the opportunity to work with leading experts in the field and to collaborate with other researchers both within and outside of the division.
Project description
The division of Physical Resource Theory is one of five divisions within the department of Space, Earth and Environment. The Division of Physical Resource Theory offers an interdisciplinary research environment that relies on a range of different scientific methods, from energy system modelling and agent-based modelling, to remote sensing, econometrics and surveys. Our aim is to advance challenge-driven scientific excellence by crossing traditional disciplinary boundaries and increasing the level of cross-collaboration in environmental research and with society at large. The division has around 50 staff members, faculty, and PhD-students with diverse expertise, including engineers and natural and social scientists. We also offer courses in areas related to our research.
The project focuses on three aspects of uncertainty affecting the future electricity system: extreme weather events, technical failures of transmission lines or large generators, and geopolitical events. The project aims to find a way to design the system to mitigate these uncertainties. The post-doc will be responsible for developing a stochastic optimization model and include probability functions for weather, technical failures, and geo-political risks. The research group consists of experienced energy system modelers and optimization experts with a strong international network in energy system modeling, operational research, and energy security.
As PhD student you are expected to work independently under supervision. The doctoral program is supposed to lead to the doctoral degree, equivalent to four years of full-time studies, which includes research, coursework, and participation in seminars and conferences. Including teaching obligations, the position is expected to be five years.
As a post-doc you are expected to be an independent researcher conducting state of the art research. Full-time temporary employment for at least 2 years with opportunities to extend to 4 years. The position also included around 20% teaching.
Major responsibilities

• Presenting research findings and writing academic publications.
• Staying updated on developments in your field, and incorporating new knowledge into the project as appropriate.
• Completing other tasks as assigned by the project lead to ensure the success of the project.
Qualifications
For PhD student master's degree or equivalent in energy systems, engineering, mathematics, or physics.
For post-doc PhD in energy systems, mathematic or data science. A strong academic record is expected.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
