hela Sverige At Linköping University we embrace innovative thinking. Constantly challenging ourselves has been our strongest motivator ever since we opened our doors in 1975. We are driven by seeking answers beyond the traditional and across subject boundaries. If you are too, we would like to see you at our university. Together we can find solutions to the challenges of the day.
The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology conducts research and offers education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Research, the predominant activity, is often done in collaboration with corporate and international partners. We are one of the university's largest, oldest and most well known departments, encompassing five interacting scientific fields: biology, chemistry, material physics, applied physics and theory and modelling.

Hereby advertises a position as
PhD student (licentiate) in Applied Physics
formally based at Complex Materials and Devices
Duties
As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.
Project title: Towards high-Voc Organic Solar Cells
Background: Although power conversion efficiencies above 10% are now routinely reported for organic solar cells (OSC), these devices still suffer from significant voltage losses. The origin of these, and whether they are avoidable or not, is still unclear.
The candidate will investigate non-fullerene OSC to address two urgent fundamental questions: (i) the (quantitative) relation between the slow relaxation of photocarriers and the open circuit voltage and (ii) the role of the effective bandgap and the CT energy in that. Technically spoken, the problem is about relating kinetic phenomena (relaxation leading to energy loss and high, transient mobilities) to observables (Jsc, Voc, FF) that traditionally are interpreted in terms of thermodynamic equilibrium. Answering these questions will be immensely helpful for rational materials selection and for determining fundamental limits to OPV efficiency.
The above fundamental quest combines naturally with a more pragmatic program, targeting structure-property relations. The candidate will characterize donor/acceptor combinations in terms of energetic disorder, energy loss, CT energy and transient behavior. For this in-house facilities for device fabrication, temperature-dependent IV-measurements and ultra-sensitive EQE/IQE measurements can be used. Through internationals collaborations we have access to ultrafast optical and electrical spectroscopy, completing the picture. Experiments will be combined with available drift-diffusion and kinetic Monte Carlo models that will be extended when needed.
A completed Masters Degree in (applied) physics or equivalent is required. Prior experience with (the device physics of) organic photovoltaic devices and quantitative modeling is a strong pre. With proven suitability of the successful candidate the possibility to extend this project to a full PhD exam (4 years) exists.
Qualifications
Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.
Appointment time
The first appointment will be for a maximum of one year and will be extended. At studies that are completed with a licentiate exam the total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of two years ' full time research training.
Starting date
By agreement.
Salary
The salary for PhD students is based on the department's salary scale.
