The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience - MC2 is a unique research department in micro- and nanotechnology, housing more than 200 researchers and PhD students. At the terahertz and millimetre wave division, main research activities are on technologies with applications ranging from basic science to future wireless sensors and communication systems. This research project is supported by the Swedish Foundation for strategic research (SSF) and aims to explore future solutions for wireless communication at terahertz frequencies. In particular, the focus is on emerging or future telecommunication applications that require disruptive technology with ultra-wide bandwidth and data rates far beyond the 5G and 6G roadmaps.

Major responsibilities
Your research will be directed towards terahertz electronics for the next generation of wireless systems. This includes research on system architectures and active front-end transceiver components. The objective is to open up new short-distance communication applications requiring ultra-high data rates. The research work will be pursued at the terahertz and millimetre wave laboratory, Chalmers. You will fabricate terahertz semiconductor devices and circuits in our state-of-the-art Nanofabrication facility at MC2 and perform experiments in the terahertz characterisation facility (Kollberg laboratory).

Your primary responsibility as a PhD student is to pursue your doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level, corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have a master's degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Engineering Physics (F) or Electrical Engineering (E) with a curriculum that provides a solid foundation in microwave engineering and microelectronics. Experience or a strong interest in the following areas: communication theory, electromagnetic theory, nanofabrication, and semiconductor device physics are essential.

You should have good communication skills, the ability to work in an interdisciplinary group, good analytical and experimental skills and an excellent ability to work independently towards the goals expressed in the project plans.
Further, as the position is a collaboration between research groups and industry, you must enjoy working in different environments and proactively participate in new research initiatives.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
