PhD student in Ecology, with specialization in Fish Ecology and Microbiology
Linnaeus University is a modern, international university in southern Sweden. The university is situated in Kalmar and Växjö, and has 34,000 students and 2,000 employees. For more information see: Lnu.se. The School of Natural Sciences is part of the Faculty of science and engineering. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Organic Chemistry, Marine Ecology, Evolutionary Ecology and Microbiology. The Linnaeus University Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems (EEMiS) at the School of Natural Sciences now seeks a PhD student in Ecology.
Project title: Ecology and evolution of fish microbiology and immunity
The research project:
The research project is centered on ecological and evolutionary interactions between microorganisms, pathogens and host innate immunity in wild fish populations. Interaction with pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms is a reality for all animals and infectious diseases shape the ecology and evolution of the host species they infect. Fishes belonging to the same species might inhabit very different habitats ranging from rivers, freshwater lakes to brackish waters. These different environments may not only have very different microbial (and pathogen) faunas but might also differ in abiotic factors (pH, salinity, temperature), which in turn might change the efficiency of the innate immune system. The current project aims to describe and understand the structure, dynamics and interactions in microbial communities on fish. Further, these studies include within and between population variations in fish's abilities to inhibit pathogen growth that may correlate with ecological and evolutionary factors of the host.
The EEMiS environment is a center of excellence within Linnaeus University involving larger teams of multidisciplinary researchers. Therefore, the successful applicant will interact with other existing research projects within EEMiS.
Requirements:
Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 7. The PhD studies are limited to 4 years (100%). Persons with combined experience in fish ecology, molecular biology, limnology, evolution, and microbiology are encouraged to apply. The starting point for the PhD education is flexible and may be negotiated.
