1 PhD student in the research education subject: Biology
Understanding and preventing root rot of conifers
The overall aim of the research project is to understand the processes that determine the outcome of the interactions between the root rot pathogen Heterobasidion annosum s.l. and conifers with the ultimate goal of find ways to control the fungal disease. Applying a combination of genetic and genomic approaches will ensure identification of relevant genes. Complete genome sequence information from H. annosum together with a genetic linkage map, provide excellent sources for candidate gene identification. Focus will be on identification of candidate virulence genes from the fungal pathogen H. annosum s.l. using bioinformatics and state of the art molecular biology tools and techniques. Functional analysis of candidates will be performed in transformation experiments. The Department of Forest Mycology and Pathology is part of the newly established science cluster, Uppsala BioCenter, representing an excellent life science environment. We conduct both fundamental and applied research, focused on interactions between plants, fungi and other microorganisms and their roles in forest and agricultural systems.
Qualifications
Higher university degree in forestry, biology, genetics, cell biology, biomedicine, biotechnology, or biochemistry is required. Experience of practical laboratory work, the subject and/or the methods, and a true interest in science, are regarded as additional qualifications. Also, personal qualifications such as ability to cooperate with others will be considered. Good written and spoken English is required.

Those who met the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 Higher education credits or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of 2015."
Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
