The Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management is part of the faculty for Landscape Planning, Horticulture and Agricultural Sciences. Teaching and research responsibilities of the department cover six thematic areas: landscape planning, landscape analysis, governance and management, urban vegetation, cultural heritage, and design of urban landscapes. Teaching and research are multidisciplinary, including the perspectives of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and technology. Of special concern is the development of action-oriented knowledge about society and sustainable urban environments through studies of planning and design practices. The department's staff comprises 80 members, active in both teaching and research.

VIVA-PLAN aims to develop a sustainable spatial planning framework for revitalising in-between spaces for social inclusion, biodiversity and well-being, including safety and security.
Description:
We are searching for a doctoral student to join us in a research project named VIVA-PLAN being coordinated by SLU. Empirical research will be conducted in three districts within Malmö, Södertälje and Copenhagen, with support from the international reference sites Winnipeg (Canada) and Utrecht (The Netherlands).

This role will involve research and PhD thesis preparation tasks over four years. The successful candidate will be responsible for: 1) identifying and applying photo-elicitation techniques for engaging vulnerable groups; 2) assessing the social networks between diverse actors and citizens; 3) the application of public participation GIS tools for identifying the different types of social values and perceived problems assigned to in-between spaces by residents in each area; and 4) the creation of a PhD thesis suitable for external examination in year four.

Specific tasks include literature reviews, data management and collection, analysing and compiling results, participation in PhD courses and thesis writing.

Qualifications:
Required:

Masters completed in ecology, social sciences or related field

Demonstrated experience working on the topics of green infrastructure, nature-based solutions and/or socio-ecological systems in urban areas

Demonstrated experience in engaging diverse stakeholders (e.g., industry, government, academics and landholders)

Excellent written and oral English communication skills

Effective inter- and intrapersonal communication skills

Desired:

Ability to speak one or more languages of new migrants (e.g., Turkish, Persian/Farsi or Arabic) will be an advantage.

Place of work:
Alnarp, Sweden. Some field work and attendance of meetings across the European Union will be expected.

A person has basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education. Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English B/English 6 are a basic requirement.
