PhD - Model-based Testing of Mechatronic Systems

At Research & Development you will be a key contributor to the next generation outstanding luxury cars from Volvo. Together with other engineers around the world, you and your team will create innovative human-centric car technology that makes life less complicated and more enjoyable for people. Are you interested in design and connected car technology? Do you share our passion for people, the environment and our urge to create a superior driving experience? Research and Development is the place for you to prosper.

The department of Electric Propulsion Systems (EPS) is part of Powertrain Engineering within R&D and consists of approximately 200 persons. EPS is mainly responsible for developing high voltage (HV) systems for the hybrid/electric cars. The group Systems Design leads EPS cross-functional work within Diagnostics & Dependability, Functional and Electrical Safety, HV Electrical Architecture and SW integration. Today the group consists of 20 persons.

Project description and responsibilities:

Following the current trends in the automotive industry, the usage of advanced mechatronic control system technology will continue to increase. Combined with the rapid growth of embedded automotive software and increasing network complexity, new baselines will be required for early and reliable software/electronics test and validation. You will contribute to reduce the development costs and increase the quality of control systems that are used in complex mechatronic systems. To this end, rigorous test methods based on formal methods, in particular model-based testing (MBT) will be developed. MBT is a relatively new research area in the automotive industry and has become increasingly popular in recent years. In MBT, test cases are automatically and systematically generated from abstract models of the system under test and the desired behavior of the system. The main application of the mechatronic systems in this project will be in hybrid/electric cars.

Your main responsibility will be to get a thorough understanding of the state-of-the-art methods in MBT; and then develop efficient algorithms that can generate test cases based on a number of models representing text requirements and physical components.

You will test the algorithms in Model In the Loop (MIL) and Hardware In the Loop (HIL) environments at Volvo and carry out a benchmark analysis (with other existing commercial tools). You will have a close collaboration other groups at EPS, especially with the test engineers. The programme will run for 4 years and at the end you shall have published a number of scientific articles that will result in a Ph.D. thesis.

This position will support and strengthen Volvo Cars as a Luxury Brand Manufacturer and is a collaboration between Volvo Car Group, Chalmers University of Technology and Quviq AB.
