At Mälardalen University people meet who want to develop themselves and the future. Our 15 000 students read courses and study programmes in Business, Health, Engineering and Education. We conduct research within all areas of education and have internationally outstanding research in future energy and embedded systems. Our close cooperation with the private and public sectors enables us at MDH to help people feel better and the earth to last longer. Mälardalen University is located on both sides of Lake Mälaren with campuses in Eskilstuna and Västerås.

At the School of Business, Society and Engineering our students are studying to be for example Bachelors or Masters of Engineering, political scientists and business administrators. Here we have the research specialisations of Industrial Engineering and Management, and Future Energy. Our work takes place in cooperation with and in strategic agreements with companies, organisations and public authorities in the region.

Campus location: Västeras
School: School of Business, Society and Engineering, (EST)

Position description
The main part of the PhD student's working time is devoted to his/her own research studies. The PhD work is focused on the development and implementation of complex simulation models and analysis techniques for advanced plant monitoring, control optimization and decision making, applied to oil refinement processes. Particular focus will be given in constructing physical/mathematical models or expert systems to describe the behaviour of process/plant components, systems and/or the physical phenomena of interest. The project will include the development of a feed-forward model predictive control concept combining physics-based and data-driven models with machine learning techniques and Near-InfraRed (NIR) spectroscopy-based characterization of the properties of the feed oil. The project may also include some experimental validation work related to NIR spectroscopy within the facilities of the SPECTRA lab at the Future Energy Center.

The PhD student is expected to take initiatives, develop own ideas and work independently when needed, as well as take responsibility for the work. Furthermore, the project interacts closely with other parallel PhD projects and industrial partners. Thus the applicant needs to have high collaborative skills. The PhD student needs to be able to disseminate and communicate scientific results and knowledge orally as well as in written form within existing and new networks. This includes academia, industry and society at large. The research results will be presented at project meetings, conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

In addition to research studies, the position may include departmental work, mostly teaching duties, as well as time spent at the industrial partners' facilities. The PhD student will be employed by MDH and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. Employment is limited and equivalent to full-time studies at the graduate level for up to 4 years.

Qualifications
Employment as a doctoral student requires admittance to a graduate (research) program within a Swedish university. Reference is made to the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 (SFS 1993: 100). To be accepted to the graduate (research) program in Energy and Environmental Engineering the student should have one of the following:

• Completed a Master's degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits (Swedish: civilingenjör) in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or engineering physics.
• Completed a four-year science education with technical content equivalent to a Master's degree within the above subjects.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.

Further qualifications and merits
You are open-minded and interested in collaborating across borders within and outside MDH. Interest in and experience research as well as a stay at an institution other than the one where your MSc was awarded are considered merits. Teamwork, leadership, organizational and entrepreneurial skills are advantages. Further qualifications and merits for the position are:

• Knowledge of energy systems related to energy conversion or knowledge of chemical engineering processes related to oil refinement.
• Experience and interest in interaction with various international partner organizations and professional management and cooperation, including representing MDH at national and international events.
• Knowledge of, experience with and interest in modeling, simulation and optimization of energy processes with conventional tools. Good programming skills and/or knowledge of e.g. Modelica, Matlab, C++, Fortran, Python etc. is an added advantage.
• A few years of experience in industrial R&D or in academic research within InfraRed Spectroscopy, Oil refining, Machine Learning, or Process control.
• Ability to collaborate with other researchers as well as work independently.
• Curious, goal-oriented, flexible, ambitious, and communicative personality.
• Interest in developing methods and bringing them into different application areas.
• Experience with teaching at university level in energy engineering
