Project title
Proto-oncogene survivin as effector and therapeutic target in rheumatoid arthritis
Job assignments
Proto-oncogenes are normal genes that when activated, mutated or over-expressed can promote cell transformation or tumorigenesis in man. Our recent studies show that proto-oncogene survivin a) is over-expressed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), b) has high predictive value to early identify RA patients with poor prognosis, which imply its practical value for clinical rheumatology. These facts enable us to explore clinical efficacy of proto-oncogene specific treatment modalities. Our preliminary data suggest the existence of cause-and-consequence relationship between the expression of survivin and intracellular tyrosine kinase signaling in human and experimental arthritis. To evaluate physiological relevance of these clinical observations we will in detail assess the mutual immune mechanisms regulated by survivin in the context of abberant inflammatory responses evoked in RA patients. This project will also explore survivin-targeting approaches using short interfering RNA and lentivirus technique for the treatment of RA in experimental arthritides.
Treatment of RA has been recently improved with TNF-targeting drugs however remission is still an unachievable goal for the majority of the patients. Results of this project have broad implementation in screening of patients with early RA, and follow-up of antirheumatic treatment.
PhD positions are financed mainly through education grants during the first two years and employment as doctoral students during the last two years and pertains to a doctoral degree.
Eligibility
The general entry requirements are fulfilled if you have either 1, a second cycle degree (usually described as a masters degree) or 2, completed courses at an academic level corresponding to at least 240 education credits. At least 60 of these credits must be at second cycle level. 60 credits is equal to one year of full-time studies. You also need to fulfill the specific entry requirements which is an English language requirement; Engelska B.
Assessment
After the application deadline has passed, an initial assessment of the candidates eligibility is made at the faculty office and sent to the project supervisor for selection. The process can then take up to 6 months before a candidate is selected.
