The European Spallation Source ERIC (ESS) in Lund is seeking a creative and collaborative Public Engagement Officer who has the experience and communication skills to make an impact in a complex and changing environment.
This is an excellent opportunity to help shape one of Europe's leading scientific research centres as it moves from construction into scientific operations. Your role will be key to generating a sense of ownership, pride and positivity in the locality by telling the human story behind this transnational 'big science' facility being built on their doorstep.
Stakeholder relations are crucial to the success of the facility and need to be structured and coordinated. ESS has recently created a new Strategy Directorate to strengthen how it develops relationships with its stakeholders and builds support for its ambition to deliver First Science in 2023. Working as part of that team, you will develop a collaborative strategy and bring together activitiesto increase ESS's engagement with key external stakeholders inthe locality and wider Copenhagen area.
Description of main responsibilities
Engaging with the public is an essential component of any modern science facility. Our ambition is to develop a long-term relationship with our public and move far beyond activities that could be simply described as 'outreach' where information is transmitted in a one-way process. You will do this by co-working with key stakeholder groups to provide a framework for engagement to openly share the outcomes and processes of research in a way that develops knowledge and generates enthusiasm and pride.
This work will include:
• Lead on the development of our strategy for Public Engagement, ensuring the buy-in of internal and external stakeholders
• Work with staff and external groups to develop a clear, coherent and visible plan to deliver our strategy
• Coordinate delivery of relevant activities with key external and internal stakeholders
• Align content and storytelling with other ESS activities
• Secure funding for projects with external partners
• Work cross-border to ensure both Swedish and Danish partners are fully engaged
• In time, we would expect a further development of the plan and activities for the scale-up of activities in all member countries
Qualifications
We expect the applicants to have the following experience and qualifications:
• Five years professional experience from a similar role, including developing a strategy and action plan at a research infrastructure or similar organisation
• Solid understanding of latest thinking in public engagement and the needs of different public audiences
• Proven project management skills, including experience of relevant financial management and reporting
• Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, quickly earning respect and standing as an external ambassador
• Experience in public engagement project evaluation
• Adaptable, resilient, highly motivated and results oriented
• Excellent oral and written English skills
• Academic degree in a subject relevant to the portfolio of responsibility and tasks
Context
With highly skilled scientists, engineers and technologists from over 50 countries, ESS provides an international atmosphere and an environment that is exciting and characterised by a fast pace of work. You will benefit most from this opportunity if you enjoy the diversity this environment offers and have a personality suited for the challenges it presents.
• The ESS is a pan-European project funded by thirteen member states.
• It is one of the largest science infrastructure projects being built in Europe today, is one of the landmarks on the ESFRI Roadmap 2016.
• The mission of ESS is to design, build and operate the world's leading research facility using neutrons for science and innovation.
• Excellence, openness, collaboration and sustainability are the core values of the organisation.
• First Science is planned for 2023 with the completion of the construction phase with the instruments included in the construction budget in 2026.
