hela Sverige The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Mechanical Technical Engineer within the Linac Group.
Job description
The position is for a mechanical technical engineer to work on the installation, testing and operation of the Normal Conducting Front End (NCFE) of the ESS proton accelerator. The successful candidate will join a small team within the ESS Accelerator Division and will provide skilled mechanical and technical support to the group through activities such as assembling and testing of the NCFE linac structures and their components, supporting and performing installation work, supporting and performing maintenance, service and repair of the linac structures, equipment and machinery owned by the group.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities associated with this position include, but are not limited to:
• Perform installation studies for the various systems of the NCFE;
• Preparation of the workshop for the assembly of the Drift Tube Linac;
• Assembling, testing and installation of the Drift Tube Linac tanks and their components;
• Assembling, testing and installation of the Radio Frequency Quadrupole and its components;
• Making or modifying parts for prototyping, operations, and maintenance of the NCFE;
• Participating in the design and development of new and existing parts and assemblies, including designing and drafting those used for the operation and development of the NCFE;
• Supporting and performing all mechanical system operational servicing, repair and maintenance associated with the NCFE;
• Determine budget requirements, plan and schedule machine maintenance and servicing;
• Maintain inventory and restock required spares, equipment, and material resources;
• Plan for preventative maintenance programs and proposed equipment modifications;
• Initiating repair and maintenance of a wide range of installed components of the NCFE;
• Establishing and maintaining safe and efficient working arrangements for you and for all staff working under your control, in particular during the NCFE installation phase.
Required Qualifications
• Higher technical diploma in the field of mechanics or electromechanics, or equivalent;
• Minimum 2 years of practical relevant and specialized experience;
• Proven skills in the precision assembly of mechanical and basic electrical components according to assembly drawings and procedures;
• Experience in testing, troubleshooting and maintenance of tools and equipment, measurement and layout, record keeping and documentation, and basic industrial rigging and crane operation;
• Knowledge of engineering techniques and skills in mechanical drafting and modelling using CAD (preferably CATIA);
• Good knowledge of spoken and written English.
Technical competencies and experience
• Competencies and demonstrated experience in design of mechanical and electro-mechanical systems;
• Competencies in producing engineering drawings and specifications;
• Demonstrated experience with commissioning, operation and maintenance of mechanical and/or electro-mechanical equipment;
• Experience in installation and dismantling of mechanical equipment and systems;
• A sound understanding of mechanical engineering workshop practice and of appropriate workshop safety procedures and their correct application is required;
• Experience of leading the work of others, including contractors and apprentices, would be useful.
Other information
This position requires some physical activity, such as lifting and carrying items, etc. The selected candidate must be physically fit for the work. It is expected that during commissioning, early operations and later in maintenance periods occasional shift work (including nights and weekends) is required. In the normal operation phase scheduled on-call service but no permanent physical presence at site is required during off-business hours.You will be expected to be willing to enter radiologically designated areas.Occasional travel is expected.
