This is us, your new colleagues

At Volvo Materials Technology in Gothenburg, we are a team of more than 35 highly qualified Engineers. We support Volvo's products by using our specialist knowledge in materials, for aftermarket and all stages during the development process.
Materials Technology is organized within the section of Verification, Testing, and Materials Technology. We have a state-of-the-art materials laboratory that helps us in delivering materials services to all the Volvo Group Brands worldwide.
We improve the experience and the quality of Volvo Group's products by analyzing and solving field- and production issues, supplier quality, and material development, in collaboration with other cross functional engineering teams.
We work closely with stakeholders within the Volvo Group, to understand their strategies and devise solutions to support and boost the competitive advantage. We act as a global internal consultant service within the Volvo Group, and therefore deal with a wide variety of components, parts, and materials.

About the role

You will be a member of the New Technologies team where you will work, along with other tasks, on analysis of batteries, in particular lithium-ion batteries for heavy-duty vehicles.
You will manage and participate in material investigation projects, failure analyses, material validation of new suppliers and write engineering reports with recommendations for decisions and corrective actions.
You are expected to take a leading role in solving issues together with colleagues from various parts of the Volvo Group and share knowledge within the organization. With time, you should be able to build up a broad network within the company and identify key counterparties within your material field.
In this role, you will take part in continuous improvements of the laboratory, thus will be responsible for equipment, maintenance, and method development.
The position is based in Gothenburg (Lundby), but travel may be needed occasionally.

Who are you?

We do not know you yet, but we believe that you are a solution-oriented person who enjoys working cross-functionally and building relationships. Since you are expected to carry out your own material investigations, you enjoy practical laboratory tasks and are skilled within your domain. You have a PhD in Materials Science (or comparable work experience) in the field of lithium-ion batteries and have a good understanding of their chemistry-structure-property relationship. We are looking for you who have several years of both theoretical, and hands-on experience of batteries for automotive applications and their characterization. Therefore, you are expected to master at least some of the most common characterization techniques commonly used within the battery industry (ex. SEM/EDS, GC, ICP, XRD etc.). You have experience in disassembling and analysing batteries and their materials in protective environments (glovebox) and have a good understanding of safe handling and laboratory practices.

What drives success in this role:
A "can do" mindset and eagerness to learn new things.
You are a team player but can work independently likewise.
Ability to initiate and acting, leading your own projects from start to finish.
You aim for customer success by capturing customers' needs and helping them to contextualize ideas for investigative actions and test methods.
You can adapt in a complex and quick-moving environment.
Flexibility and prioritization are demonstrated abilities of yours.
Knowledge sharing comes naturally for you as well as asking for support when it is needed.
You are fluent in English, both written and spoken. Swedish is a merit!

It is meritorious if you have good understanding of battery aging processes and electrical/chemical/fire risks related to batteries.

At Volvo Group Trucks Technology, we are actively working to establish teams that will take maximum advantage of the strength inherent in differences, in knowledge, experience, age, gender, and nationality, etc. Customer Success, Trust, Passion, Change, and Performance are the values that guides us.
