About the Master Thesis
For this Master Thesis You'll create a business model for a second life for on and off-board chargers. The business model should include a full life cycle for the product and compare pros and cons with and without a second life application. If the same power converter is used for both on-and off board charging, the benefits would be increased production volumes and economy of scale.
Background
The Power converters for charging are basically the same building blocks for on- and off board chargers, so the same power converters could be used in both applications. The main difference for on-and off board chargers are the environment such as temperatures, vibrations and available space.
Lifetime calculations and monitoring systems are available and the predictive maintenance work is a part of Volvo strategy so in time the knowledge of remaining lifetime for the power converters will be very precise and with higher production volumes the data will be even more precise.
Plan
Do a case study on the OCEPS (Onboard Charger Electric Power Supply) design where the second life application is an off-board DC Charger.
A second step should be to propose next generation of power converter where a second life is already considered as an ongoing design requirement.
