Malmö University, located in the centre of Malmö, is an innovative, urban, and international institute of higher education, with about 1800 employees and 24000 students. Research and education at the University are characterised by the urgent demands of contemporary society - to contribute to sustainability and equality, based in rigorous science, in close co-operation with external partners and stakeholders, prioritising and addressing the challenges of the future. Faculty and students work collaboratively to acquire, share, and disseminate knowledge, in order to understand, explain and develop societal circumstances - locally as well as globally.
The faculty of Health and Society
The education and research activities at the faculty contribute with the knowledge useful to preserve, support and promote people's physical, psychological, and social health. Research is taking place in areas ranging from science in technology and medicine to social science. At the interfaces between them, exciting new areas for research are being generated. The research at the faculty is also linked to the research center Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces which combines biomedical science with clinical and translational research in medical, dental, food and environmental application areas in close collaboration with regional industry.
Licentiate student position in Biomedical Science
The Lic-student position will be placed at the Faculty of Health and Society. The research topic is "Biomedical Science" and the Faculty offers a Degree of Licentiate of Philosophy in Medical Science. The Licentiate students will also have the opportunity to take part in teaching. According to regulations, teaching and administrative work is, however, limited to a maximum of 20% of working hours. Provisions on appointment as a Licentiate student are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5. When making the appointment, under Chapter 5, Section 5 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, consideration must be given to the student's ability to benefit from studies.
Tasks
The topic of the research project is to perform complex multi-parameter (both invasive and non-invasive) analysis of volunteers using commercially available devices, including wearables and medically certified blood analysers, as well as newly designed devices developed during the implementation of the current project. Thus, the technological objective of the project is to design and test an entirely new class of biodevices - non-invasive multi-parameter medical gadgets for fitness and health status monitoring. In spite of the ambitious technical objective, the project is fundamentally oriented, focused on the complex important scientific question, i.e. possible interrelationships between concentration/presence of bioanalytes/biomarkers and fitness and health status/advancement of disease. To accomplish the scientific goals of the project, big data sets will be collected and mathematically analysed using advanced computing systems and artificial intelligence.
PhD-student position in Biomedical science
In order to be considered for appointment as a doctoral student, the applicant must meet the general and specific entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes, and is considered in other respects to have the ability required to benefit from the course or study programme. Ordinance (2010:1064). The higher education institution may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements for an individual applicant, if there are special grounds. Ordinance (2010:1064).
General entry requirements:
• a second-cycle higher education degree
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle
• in some other way, nationally or internationally, acquired equivalent knowledge.
Specific entry requirements comprise at least 90 ECTS, of which 30 ECTS should be at second cycle level, in a subject which is of relevance for the research domain in question or which in some other way involve broadly equivalent knowledge.
In addition, adequate knowledge of English is required.
Basis of assessment
In ranking the applicants, particular emphasis will be put on knowledge in biomedical analysis, practical experience in wearable technology, and understanding of advance biomedical analysis and technology. Certified biomedical analysts are encouraged to apply. Previous experience in multi-parameter analysis of volunteers and/or patients is highly valued.
