Projekt
G213 57/11
Characterization of neuroblastoma tumors with 11q-deletion; A new high-risk entity with chromosomal instability and later onset
Application deadline: 2011-02-03
Description of research project
Neuroblastoma is a tumor of the sympathetic nervous system that primarily affects young children. Although major progress has been made in several fields in oncology in recent years, aggressive neuroblastoma in childhood still constitute a major clinical problem. There is treatment for high-risk neuroblastoma cases, but it cures far from all children, and furthermore, the treatment is very demanding for the child and sometimes severe side effects arise even when patients survive. It is therefore of great clinical interest to further study the biological parameters that can (i) better classify tumors so that the children may be given the right treatment (ii) identify new biological targets for treatment.
We recently published a study of genetic profiling of 165 neuroblastoma tumors and in detail characterized the different high-risk profiles i.e. those with MYCN amplification and those with 11q-deletion (PNAS 2010 107:4323-8). There was a high frequency of chromosomal breaks in the 11q-deletion group suggestive of a chromosomal instability phenotype gene located in 11q. The aim of this PhD project is to further study the 11q deletion group of tumors/patients and to try to identify better prognostic and therapeutic tools for this group.
The experiments we device here are essential for future understanding of the genetics behind NB development and they will provide a basis for future clinical trials. In the near future, it is nevertheless expected to contribute to a better classification of patients and tumors, and a better understanding of which patients that will benefit from an alternative treatment.
The PhD position is partly financed by the BioCARE program and the supervisors are Professors Tommy Martinsson, GU and Sven Påhlman, LU. Part of the project will be performed at the laboratory of Prof. Påhlman at MAS, Malmö.
Desired background
For this project we would like to recruit a student with interest and preferably previous experiences in some of the following areas: cancer genetics, cancer genomics, mutation detection, cell biology, cell culturing techniques and related areas.
