Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

The Department of Building technology works together with neighboring departments, Forest and wood technology, Built environment and energy technologies and Mechanical engineering, to create a research environment that includes topics related to structural design and material science. The home of this environment is the Faculty of technology. The environment includes about 60 employees, including 12 professors, and it is expanding considerably.

Admittance in: Building Technology

Employment: Employment as a doctoral student is limited according to HF chapter 5 § 7. The total employment period may not be longer than the equivalent postgraduate studies full-time for four years.

Placement city: Växjö, Sweden

Job description
Linnaeus University, Department of Building Technology, is searching for applicants for a 4-year full-time Ph.D. position. According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post.

Steel is a very competitive building material for applications where slender and lightweight structures are desired. However, mining of iron ore and the process to manufacture steel is connected to large environmental impact and energy consumption. Besides high rate of recycling, increased usage of high-strength steel contribute to use refined steel more efficiently. To reduce the material usage and really make use of the improved steel quality, the cross section dimensions (especially the thickness) are made thinner and more slender. However, such cross sections unexpected instability phenomena may arise without any preceding warnings if not considered properly in the design process.

The Ph.D. project deals with research questions on local instability phenomena of connections and the sensitivity to imperfections e.g. deviation of cross section profiles, miss-alignment of connecting members, welding deformations and residual stresses. The questions will be explored by developing a hierarchy of Finite Element (FE) models which enables to study both the global behaviour at system level and the local connections in a systematic way. The department has access to advanced experimental equipment and to validate the finite element models of the local connections, structural testing employing hybrid testing methodology is planned. In such a test setup, the finite element model on system level controls the excitation of a physical test of selected specimens by exchanging information covering deformations and forces.
