The Instrument Technologies Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Detector Systems Design Section Leader in the Instrument Technologies Division.

Description of directorate/division

The Detector Group is responsible for managing the delivery, installation commissioning and long term operation of detector systems for the neutron instruments at ESS.
The Design Section comprises the detector experts who ensure the delivery of performant detectors for ESS instruments and conceive, develop, test and analyse neutron detector concepts for application on ESS instruments. The Section is also responsible to ensure their installation and commissioning and subsequent operation in partnership with the other three sections in the Group.

Description of main responsibilities

• This position will be responsible for line managing this Section (of about 10 people), giving hands-on help to the projects, planning the work and ensuring that it is aligned with the planning of the other sections.
• This is a senior role in the Detector Group. This position will also help the Group Leader and fellow section leaders in the day-to-day running and strategic direction of the Group. Mentoring and developing of new talent is expected.
• As ESS is a mainly in-kind project, there will be a lot of interaction with partners to enable successful delivery of detectors in an open, collaborative and transparent fashion. This in turn implies a degree of informal supervision of collaborative partners.
• There will be administrative aspects to this position to enable the smooth running of the group and the projects. There is a moderate degree of travel expected as it is a geographically distributed project.

Qualifications

• The candidate should be well-rounded with an interest in detector hardware, electronics, simulation and data analysis as well as demonstrable technical skills.
• Experience with actualising detector systems for use at research facilities is required.
• Experience with either detecting neutrons or with gaseous detectors would be highly advantageous.
• The candidate should have demonstratable relevant technical skills.
• Knowledge of modern detector electronics is required.
• Prior experience of development and commissioning of such systems would be an advantage.
• Advanced level of IT required. Familiarity with linux, code repositories and programming (especially python and C++). Experience with using and interpreting simulation tools (e.g. GEANT, FLUKA, MCNP, GARFIELD, etc) is an advantage.
• Good data analysis and interpretation skills are needed.
• Experience in the building, commissioning and/or operating of detectors for use at large research institutes would be a distinct advantage.
• Previous line or project management (formal or informal) is desired. Experience of informal management of collaborative groups (through e.g. experimental collaboration, grants, in-kind arrangements, etc) is an advantage.
• Experience of supervision (formal or informal) and mentoring of more junior people is helpful.
• The ability to work both independently and in groups is needed.
• The candidate should be able to install a team atmosphere amongst colleagues.
• The ability to work well under schedule pressure in a complex environment is needed.
• Excellent people skills, soft skills and problem solving ability are expected.
• Experience of large experimental collaborations is highly desired.
• This position requires excellent communication skills (conversation, presentation and writing levels) in English. The working language will be English. Knowledge of other European languages is an advantage.
• Administrative competence is required.
