The University has 40 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
MAX IV is a national large-scale research laboratory providing scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually. 200 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.
We are seeking a manager for the Biological Support Laboratory (Biolab).
This laboratory provides facilities for users and staff for the preparation of proteins and life science samples which will be measured on beamlines specialized in macromolecular crystallogoraphy, spectroscopy, imaging, diffraction and scattering. The Biolab provides a support function for sample preparation to make the synchrotron techniques available for new user groups in life science.
Tasks
The tasks involve:
• the start-up and operation of the MAX IV Biolab (Safety Level 1), including:
o definition of routines and procedures for the safe operation and working environment of the Biolab
o carry out safety/risk assessments for work within Biolab
o procurement of equipment, consumables and chemicals
o safe handling of all chemicals, in close collaboration with the MAX IV safety group
o supervision of users during their work within the Biolab
o scheduling of use and maintenance of equipment
o standardization and quality control protocols for laboratory equipment
o preparation of standard samples for beamline tests
o training of users and undergraduates in sample preparation and characterization methods
• continual development of biophysical characterization in the Biolab. The candidate should be familiar with standard characterization techniques, for example:
dynamic and static light scattering, chromatography, UV/Vis spectrometry,
mass spectrometry, SDS-PAGE, micro-calorimetry, enzymatic activity assays
• development of sample preparation, final purification and analysis methods, including under anaerobic conditions and within a 4°C laboratory.
Additional tasks may include, in collaboration with beamline staff and user communities:
• development of new sample environments for novel experiments
• development of serial, micro- and nano-crystallography techniques for soluble and membrane proteins
• development of preparation techniques of biological samples (e.g. cells, proteins) for X-ray measurements
Qualifications
The successful candidate has the following qualifications:
• a degree in biomedicine, biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics or other relevant subjects
• hands-on experience in protein purification
• experience of sample characterization by biophysical and biochemical methods
• experience in laboratory setup, safety regulations and management
• bio-safety level 1 lab working experience
• excellent command in English, communication skills and team working skills
• ability to work independently
The following are considered to be an asset:
• a higher degree (e.g. PhD) in biomedicine, biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics or other relevant subjects
• an appropriate qualification for laboratory management
• working experience in molecular biochemistry and biophysical methods under anaerobic conditions
• experience of working or performing experiments at large scale facilities, e.g. synchrotrons, neutron facilities and X-FELs
• hands on experience in sample production for serial crystallography
• experience in documentation using LIMS solutions and other databases.
A probationary period will apply.
