The research has broad applications in areas of health and industrial production of e.g. fine chemicals, food and energy. An important mission is to drive the development of novel and improved tools to study effects on a cellular level through systems' biology analysis and modeling tools, metabolic engineering and bioimaging. Powerful experimental platforms are avialable such as well equipped fermenters, analytical instruments and laser based microscopy. The department offers highly qualified education for engineering students within the area of bioengineering. It is furthermore collaborating in broad, interdiciplinary national and international networks within academia and the industry.
The division of Food and Nutrition Science is one of four research divisions at the Department of Life Sciences. Food and Nutrition Science is one of the leading units in the area in Sweden with particular strengths in nutritional and computational metabolomics, dietary biomarkers, micronutrient metal nutrition, nutritional immunology as well as marine food science and nutrition. The division has a wide range of modern analytical equipment for chromatography coupled with mass spectrometery, a human cell laboratory, and a microbiology laboratory. The division has also extensive collaborations with Chalmers Mass Spectrometry Infrastructure and The Swedish NMR center (University of Gothenburg). The division focuses on nutritional solutions for health and disease prevention by studies on the molecular, cellular, and whole-body level. It also has a strong focus on sustainable use of food raw materials and on many different quality aspects of food.
Project description
We are looking for 2 students (third year TKBIO/TKKMT) to work as amanuenses (part time 6h/week). One will be employed by the LIFE department and the other one by the department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The project is a collaboration between three departments (Jonas Sjöblom dept of Physics, Per Malmberg, dept of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Nathalie Scheers, dept of Life Sciences) and focuses on polution particles and their effect on lung tissue.
The amanuens employed at LIFE will learn how to culture human lung cells (broncheal origin) and set up an ALI model (Air-liquid interface) to study the effects of relevant pollution particles (produced at the dept of Physics). In addition to analysis conducted at LIFE, broncheal cell samples will be analysed at the dept. of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering by means of TOF-Sims. The ammanuens at Chemistry will learn mass spectrometry, spectra interpretation, and multivariate analysis.
