Your team
The Beamline Office is a group within the Science Division at MAX IV comprising teams that address many different tasks and responsibilities, all focusing on providing high-end support to beamlines at all stages, ranging from project phase to full user operation.

The optics engineer would join the X-ray optics team that defines, assembles, and maintains X-ray mirrors, gratings, crystals, apertures, and lenses that are used to shape and deliver the X-ray light to the experiment. The team maintains an X-ray optics metrology and assembly lab where state-of-the-art optical systems are assembled and characterized.

MAX IV is looking for an optics engineer to work closely with the existing beamlines to ensure beam delivery and devise new benchmarking instrumentation. You will also proactively lead in the design of future beamlines' components and features at MAX IV using ray tracing and FEA tools. The beamlines are complicated systems requiring high precision; during commissioning, the beamline teams often do not reach the full capability of the designed system. To understand and address these limitations, the optics team supports the beamline teams with ray tracing, heat calculations, etc, to further optimize alignment or motivate design modifications. They also strive to offer the best beamline performance possible in light of new technological advancements, accelerator upgrades, and aging systems. The engineer within the optics team is expected to support the beamlines to maintain high efficiency.

Your primary work tasks will be

- Support new beamline projects during the design phase with, e.g., ray-tracing simulations. · Ensure simulation tools are up to date and optimized for the facility
- Support internal and external users of the metrology lab
- Support the beamlines for characterization of beamline optics by ray tracing
- Supporting beamlines in alignment, troubleshooting, and commissioning after X-ray optical system interventions
- Collaborate with the optics team to plan and execute an increasing number of optics-related projects (e.g., polarization control, heat load and stability, corrosion prevention). · Devise in-situ metrology techniques · Define diagnostics to ensure high optical stability
- Partake and represent MAX IV in different collaboration initiatives with other facilities.

To be successful in this role, you need to have the following qualifications

- Ph.D. or engineering background in a STEM field
- Documented experience in X-ray optics design (X-ray simulations) and/or FEA experience
- Demonstrated experience with handling X-ray optics and instrumentation in UHV conditions or similar systems
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
- Good command of the English language, good communication, and team working skills

Below are seen as merits

- Direct experience with the operation of Synchrotron or XFEL beamlines
- Experience with different types of nano-focusing optics for synchrotron radiation
- Working knowledge of 2D/3D CAD software · Experience in cooling of x-ray optics, including cryogenic systems
- Experience in the design and implementation of X-ray optics for applications with a high degree of coherence

As a person you are organised, take initiative, and enjoy the combination of being 'hands-on' while having a deep theoretical grasp of X-ray optics.
