MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.
The MAX IV Controls and IT team (KITS) deliver solutions to the whole MAX IV organisation in the areas of control system hardware, controls software applications, infrastructure and networking, information management and scientific software. This is a dynamic and highly challenging environment and requires close collaboration with the staff in order to understand the needs and be effective in forming solutions. We are around 50 people in total who work in 5 domains in a well organised and agile way. We hold values of lean management, knowledge spread, user autonomy, continuous improvement and flexibility as guiding principles for our work.
The smooth functioning of the MAX IV synchrotron facility relies strongly on the efficient, reliable and flexible operation of its IT infrastructure.
Experiments located at the MAX IV beamlines are collecting data which has to be delivered to storage and compute resources on- as well as off-site, to be processed according to workflows specific to various scientific domains. We are currently looking for an innovative system administrator to complement our IT team in the development, deployment and operation of a modern IT and computing infrastructure.
Work duties and areas of responsibility
The successful candidate will be member of the IT Infrastructure Team, and be responsible for the operation, implementation and upgrades of central IT services at MAX IV Laboratory. This includes, but is not limited to, Active Directory and LDAP based user administration, central storage systems, virtual server environment, DNS, DHCP, VPN and other services. She/he will play a key role in the evolution of the virtual infrastructure based on virtual machine and container technologies.
Key Work Tasks:
• System administration of MAX IV's central IT services
• Development and operation of bare metal and virtual server environment
• Technical support to MAX IV staff and users
• Participation in the design of the next generation IT infrastructure
Requirements
• Several years professional experience in IT system administration
• Solid understanding of Linux and Windows operating systems
• Professional experience with
o Active Directory administration
o VMWare; certification a plus
o SAN or NAS storage systems
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
• Fluent in English
Desirable
• Experience with container platforms (docker, kubernetes)
• Working knowledge of automation tools (e.g. ansible) and scripting (e.g. bash, python, powershell)
• Experience working in scientific environment
