The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. Powered by the world's most advanced linear proton accelerator, ESS will enable cutting-edge research in materials science, energy, health, and the environment for decades to come.

Join us in shaping the future of science - from the ground up.

About the role:

ESS is entering a new era. We are transitioning from construction to operations, and our Detector Group (DetG) is central to this evolution. We are now looking for an experienced and people-focused scientist or engineer to lead our Support Section within the Detector Group.

In this leadership role, you'll be responsible for supporting the growth, performance, and wellbeing of a multi-disciplinary team of detector scientists and engineers. You will act as a bridge between DetG Support Section members and senior group leadership, helping shape strategy while ensuring that individual voices are heard and supported. The role itself is split into a 40% management position with a 60% detector scientist responsibility.

Alongside your leadership responsibilities, you will also remain technically active, contributing directly to detector R&D projects that match your expertise. You'll play a visible role in the development of neutron detection systems - supporting everything from early-stage design through to integration, commissioning, and scientific use.

What you'll do:

• Lead, manage, and mentor the Support Section of the Detector Group.
• Provide career guidance and development support to section members.
• Represent the Support Section in strategic and operational discussions with senior DetG leadership.
• Contribute technically to ongoing and future detector development initiatives.
• Present scientific and technical work at internal reviews, external conferences, and in publications.
• Ensure compliance with safety practices, quality standards, and engineering documentation protocols.

This is a three-year, fixed-term position and is based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden.

About you:

You hold a PhD in physics, engineering, or related, and can demonstrate a strong academic background and several years of highly related experience. Your experience preferentially includes leading a post-PhD neutron detector development project which has involved the ESS detector community. You enjoy working with people, and are approachable, respectful, and collaborative by nature. You work to see every individual, have a talent for considering perspectives different from your own, and are committed to the provision of a positive everyday work environment. You have demonstrable organizational and managerial skills and are knowledgeable of and versed in the ESS way-of-working.

We are building ESS from the ground up, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are vital for effective collaboration with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical staff within a multidisciplinary team where everyone is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential. We need a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, orderly, responsible and - most importantly - safe way.

The working language of ESS is English and we need someone who can start as soon as possible.

To apply:

A career at ESS gives you the opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science at a stunning, brand-new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe. We offer market competitive, individualised compensation which is differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements as well as monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.

If you see yourself in what we're looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on "apply" and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website. Submit your application as soon as you can and quote the job reference number ESD-68370 in your application.

This role requires additional background screening processes and health and safety checks, which will be performed during the recruitment process.
