The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. At present, the institute has about 380 employees and approximately 400 million SEK in total assets.
The Institute is composed of the following five departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Pathology and Genetics
• The Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
Job assignments
The statistician will be part of a research group at the Sahlgrenska Cancer Center. The group is interested in epigenetics and its role in development of diseases such as cancer. As a model system we use cancer stem cells that we isolate from brain tumours and also normal neural stem cells. The statistician will establish pipelines for analysis of epigenetic datasets and use these for analysis.
Qualifications
Bachelor or Master in statistics, mathematics, bioinformatics or equivalent degree. The applicant must be experienced with Big data and using various machine learning techniques. Advanced computer skills in R, Python, SQL, C++, Bash, Mathlab, Latex are required. Documented experience in analysis of large scale epigenetic data sets (bisulfite-seq), handling FASTQ and BAM files with data trimming, genome alignment and methylation call tools. Strongly meriting is practical experience in single-cell methylation analysis. We are an international group and excellent knowledge in written and spoken English is needed.
Employment
The employment is limited (temporary), full time for 24 months and is placed at The Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment: as agreed.
