The School of Education, Culture and Communication invites applications for the post of Senior Lecturer in the field of Mathematics/Applied Mathematics, with a posting at the Division of Applied Mathematics.

Mälardalen University is one of Sweden's largest university colleges, and is an important academic environment with its proximity to Stockholm and Uppsala. The University endeavours to maintain high quality in its education and research, and has a strong connection to the surrounding community. Such an ambition requires that the University has skilled and committed staff in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics.

The Division of Applied Mathematics at the School of Education, Culture and Communication is responsible for all education in Mathematics within the Engineering and Business study programmes, for four study programmes of our own in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics - a Bachelor's and a Master's programme within each of the areas of Financial Mathematics and Engineering Mathematics respectively - and for research studies and research in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics at the University. Thus the education and research environment in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics constitutes an important part of the research basis, above all for Business programmes and Engineering programmes as well as education at the first- and second-cycle levels, and also third-cycle studies in the subject at Mälardalen University.

The Division works strategically towards strengthening the research and education activities in the interdisciplinary applications of Mathematics with the aim of widening cooperation with the private sector, the public sector and also other Schools and research specialisations at Mälardalen University and other HEIs, among other things in the field of Mathematical Statistics, Financial and Insurance Mathematics. The area of Financial Mathematics at the Division assumes a central position in this strategic development of Mathematics in broad interdisciplinary cooperation and thereby in the research basis for Business programmes and the subject of Mathematics at the University. Therefore this advertisement has the purpose of strengthening this specialisation with a focus on the interdisciplinary applications of Mathematics in education and research.

The work assignments comprise teaching in Mathematics at the first- and second-cycle levels within the University's Financial Mathematics study programmes as well as in other courses and study programmes at Mälardalen University where teaching in Mathematics is conducted, development of the School's education and research environment in Mathematical Statistics, including the development of courses and study programmes, supervision of degree projects in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics at the Bachelor's and Master's levels, supervision of doctoral students and strengthening research, research studies and interdisciplinary and international cooperation at the University. It is also expected that a senior lecturer's duties include applying for external funding for research activities, actively and in cooperation with others, and following the development within their respective field and societal development in general which has bearing on the work at the University, for example by striving towards cooperation and close exchange of knowledge with the surrounding community.

The qualification requirements for appointment as a Senior Lecturer are both documented teaching skills and also a degree of Doctor, or equivalent academic competence or other professional qualifications of significance with regard to the subject content of the appointment and the duties included in the appointment.

To be qualified for appointment as a Senior Lecturer the applicant must have demonstrated the academic skills and teaching abilities required for the appointment. Academic skills may also have been demonstrated by the ability to achieve results in research through cooperation in joint projects of benefit to academia and industry/the public sector/society in general and through the ability to disseminate research.

The assessment of teaching skills shall apply to the planning, carrying out and evaluation of teaching as well as supervision and examination. Teaching skills shall be well documented in such a way that their quality can also be assessed.

The applicant should have completed ten weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge. A person appointed as a Senior Lecturer but lacking training in higher education teaching and learning will be offered in-house training during the first year. The course in higher education teaching and learning at Mälardalen University corresponds to ten weeks of training.

For other information, consult the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, and the appointments procedure for Mälardalen University.

The ability to teach in Swedish is an advantage but not a requirement.

Merit is attached to ongoing active research and documented cooperation with colleagues in other subjects, which have resulted in joint research publications, documented active participation in the construction and development of a research and education environment, as well as a documented ability to attract external funding for research and education.

MDH in Eskilstuna and Västerås is one of Sweden's biggest university colleges with its 14 000 students and 900 employees. It has a long tradition of cooperating with society and has entered strategic agreements with both the public and the private sector. Most study programmes fall into four main areas: economy, health and welfare, education, and technology. With its research, which often takes the form of co-production on the regional, national and global levels, MDH aims to generate useful solutions for societal development. In 1999, MDH was the world's first university to be environmentally certified, and it was the first higher education institution in Sweden to be certified for its work environment.
