The University has 42 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
MAX IV is a national large-scale research laboratory providing scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually. 200 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.
Job description:
BioMAX is the first macromolecular crystallography beamline at the new ultimate storage ring MAX IV.
The beamline has been designed to deliver an energy tunable, high brilliant x-ray beam at micrometer size and to support the majority of techniques in the field for crystals down to the micrometer range. A fast x-ray detector in combination with a high capacity sample changer is enabling very efficient data collection schemes.
BioMAX has been recently set into user operation. To reach the anticipated performance level, substantial commissioning and optimization tasks are still pending. Furthermore, new sample environments for serial-synchrotron crystallography experiments (SSX) are to be installed, tested and operated, which will build the foundation of the experimental environment of the micro-focusing beamline project MicroMAX.
In order to participate in the development, the operation and the maintenance of the MAX IV MX beamlines, we are now seeking to hire a staff scientist with a background and interest in synchrotron based macromolecular crystallography.
Tasks:
- You will take on a leading scientific role of the development of the SSX experimental environment for BioMAX and MicroMAX as a beamline scientist within the MX group.
- You will contribute to the development, commissioning and operation of BioMAX.
- You will share responsibilities for user operation and maintenance of the beamline in close collaboration with the team of scientists and engineers of the MX group and MAX IV staff.
- You will develop the BioMAX and MicroMAX user communities.
- You will participate within the training and education of the new user communities.
- You will share responsibility for the support of external users during their beamtime.
- You will develop your own in-house research program alongside the goal settings and activities of the MX group.
- You will participate in the design, installation, commissioning and operation of the micro-focusing beamline MicroMAX.
Qualifications:
The following qualifications are required:
- You hold a university PhD in natural sciences.
- You have a proven track record in the operation and development of MX beamlines and experimental station instrumentation.
- You have expert knowledge in macromolecular crystallography and experience of MX data collections at a synchrotron.
- You have expert knowledge in synchrotron instrumentation and commissioning of hard x-ray beamlines and experimental end stations.
- You have experiences in MX beamline user support.
- You have a demonstrated ability to work independently.
- You have excellent command of English.
- You have excellent communication skills and team working skills.
The following qualifications are considered an asset:
- Experiences with serial crystallography sample environments and its application at synchrotron beamlines or XFELs.
- Advanced knowledge of and experience with radiation damage related research.
- Programming skills for controlling scientific instruments and experimental data evaluations.
- Scientific support of CAD construction projects.
- Proven track record of proposing, acquiring and executing research projects and publication of those results.
- Experience of teaching at a university or in summer schools and workshops.
- Team leadership capabilities.
The interviews will be held starting from August 17, 2017 onwards.
Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.
