The role
SEI Research Associates work within ongoing projects and operate with close guidance from colleagues, supporting and undertaking project work, proposal writing and communication of project results.
The successful candidate will be based at SEI in Stockholm and will develop and execute research on climate change risk and governance. They will also support the coordination of the recently launched Adaptation Without Borders Initiative.
The successful candidate will report directly to the Head of the Climate, Energy and Society Unit and work directly alongside project managers on specific research activities.
Key duties and responsibilities include
Quantitative analysis of risk and risk exposure at global, country and sector level, including the co-development of new methodologies and collection and management of new data
Production of awareness raising materials, engaging communications products and inputs to stakeholder engagement and policy influencing processes, including event coordination
Co-authorship of scientific articles in peer reviewed journals, as well as working papers, policy briefs and online content, include data visualisation
Research into the governance of risk and options for improved climate risk management by governments, international organisations and non-state actors
Contribution to new proposals and grant applications from Swedish, European and international sources
Actively contribute to and support colleagues in Stockholm and other SEI centres to identify new opportunities, share experiences and participate in the process of innovative research design and organisational learning
Who you are
We are looking for a person with an advanced university degree in a relevant field, for example, geography, political science, economics, sociology, planning, data science or environmental studies. You will be motivated by the opportunity to contribute to applied sustainability research in a dynamic, international context.
You are driven and possess good data handling, communication and writing skills and are comfortable giving public presentations. To succeed in this role you must be able to work both in multidisciplinary, multicultural teams, as well as independently. You will be able to function in a flexible research environment and have a track record of showing initiative and the ability to identify, promote and follow your own ideas and interests. You are able to combine theoretical knowledge with practical, people-based skills.
You see problems and solutions at a systemic level and like to incorporate the interconnections between places, actors and topics in your work. You are fluent in English.
Formal qualifications and knowledge
MSc or MA in geography, political science, economics, sociology, planning, data science, environmental studies or another related field
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Proven track record of handling large datasets, undertaking quantitative analysis and using data analysis tools to create engaging visualisations or communications products
The following qualifications and experience are considered as merits:
Previous experience with project management
Previous experience in stakeholder interactions such as organizing workshops or policy dialogues
Knowledge of or experience working with quantitative climate or sustainability modelling or complex datasets related to climate change, sustainability, trade, networks, etc.
A demonstrable interest in the politics and experiences of developing countries
Personal skills required in the position
Curiosity in new topics
Commitment to develop innovative research products, ideally on topics related to climate change and globalisation
Willingness to learn, listen and share
Reliability, honesty and clarity in communication
