hela Sverige Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.
The Department of Building technology works together with neighbouring institutions, Forest and wood technology, Built environment and energy technologies and Mechanical engineering, to create a research environment that includes topics related to structural design and material science. The home of this environment is the Faculty of technology. The environment includes a total of about 60 employees, including 12 professors, and it is expanding considerably.
The University is planning to develop and offer a new MSc education in Structural Engineering. This means that research in the entire field of Structural Engineering should be extended and that new research-based courses will be developed within subjects such as mechanics, material science, advanced structural design (steel, wood, concrete and aluminium), structural dynamics, energy technology, building acoustics, finite element modelling and 3D visualization. The main focus area at the Department of Building technology lies within timber engineering, construction and material related topics, fields of high strategical importance for the University. The challenge that lies ahead requires that new personnel with complementing experiences and competences are recruited. One aim is that the holder of the chair should contribute to the development of a future more flexible way of constructing modern homes for people of today and tomorrow.
Linnaeus University, Department of Building technology, is searching for applicants for a position as a full professor of steel structures.
Field of subject for the appointment: Building technology with specialization in steel structures
Placement city: Växjö, Sweden
Scope of appointment: permanent position, full-time
Job description
The new professor's fields of special interest span from material properties (steel and other metallic materials e.g. aluminium) to structural analysis and design of load bearing elements and structures. Skills in the fields of dynamics as well as statics of structural elements and complete structures are desirable. Deep knowledge in the simulation through numerical analysis and qualified experimental experience are also eligible. Research carried out by the holder of the position should be connected to and also complement the research environment, which now includes research about timber as a load bearing material, wood and timber properties, moisture related distortions, methods for machine strength grading of timber, development and assessment of engineered products, including timber glass composites, modelling of glued and mechanical connections between timber members, structural analysis and stability of load bearing systems, solutions for vibration and acoustic issues in timber buildings as well as building information models. Research often relies on laboratory experiments, for which some advanced equipment is available, combined with numerical analysis such as finite element modelling. The research aims at products, methods and solutions that can be used by producers and practicing engineers in industry.
The work consists of research, supervision of PhD students, and education at the undergraduate and graduate levels and course development. You are expected to form and lead the scientific and pedagogical work within the area of steel and steel structures. Focus areas that fit the profile are static and/or dynamical structural design and material science. It is also expected that the applicant keeps up to date with future challenges and coming needs in the rapidly evolving building sector so that the department and the university can contribute in that development. An example of one such need that should be addressed is the need for flexibility in a building sector responsible for design and construction of homes for modern people.
The aim is to form a research group within the field in close cooperation with other faculty members. Work aiming at further development of the collaboration between universities, industry and the wider community will be a natural part of the tasks. Administrative tasks at the department may be included in the appointment. In the first one or two years of the employment, work with the establishment of the new MSc education in Structural Engineering will also be a highly prioritized task for all professors at the department.
