Postdoctoral in Diabetes and obesity

Location: Institute of Medicine, Gothenburg

The Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM) at the University of Gothenburg has been established in collaboration with Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, County Region in West Sweden, Astra Zeneca and the University of Gothenburg in a national agenda with the goal to make Sweden consolidate its world leading position within medical research.

Our primary research focus at department of molecular and clinical medicine is on metabolism, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. We support and promote research and teaching in translational medicine to improve health and to benefit society. The overall objective is to create an excellent translational research environment of high international standard.

Subject area
Diabetes and obesity

Specific subject description Brown fat cells uniquely express the protein UCP1 and dissipate energy in the form of heat.
Converting energy-storing white fat cells into energy-burning brown fat cells has great therapeutic potential for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. The ligand-gated transcription factor PPAR-gamma has been shown to play a major role in this phenotypic switch.

Job assignments
The main aim of the project is to identify novel mechanisms and novel signaling pathways controlling the browning of white fat, using a range of experimental techniques from large-scale
omic studies to focused molecular and cellular biology and biochemical studies. Specifically, the candidate will culture human and mouse adipocytes, treat them with small molecule compounds or peptides, and will measure gene regulation and downstream events by using qPCR, RNA-Seq, GRO-Seq, ChIP-Seq or assess protein localization and post-translational modifications. Specific genes will also be silenced or overexpressed using shRNA, antisense oligonucleotides, or
adenoviruses and the phenotypes will be explored.

Eligibility
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Assessment
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

The applicant should have expertise in the field of white and brown adipose tissue biology, browning of white fat, and in the transcription factor PPAR-gamma. The applicant should have experience in techniques such as Mass Spectrometry, RNA-Seq, GRO-Seq and ChIP-Seq. Further merits are experience with working in interdisciplinary research groups, publication of articles in international scientific journals, strong self-motivation, good interpersonal skills, and fluency in writing and speaking English.
