The Institute of Biomedicine, Department of Pathology and Genetics at the Sahlgrenska Academy invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the cancer genomics group at the Sahlgrenska Cancer Center (www.cancercenter.gu.se). The research in the cancer genomics group is focused on identification and characterization of fusion oncogenes and other oncogenic driver events and the use of these as diagnostic biomarkers and targets for novel cancer therapies.

Sahlgrenska Cancer Center is a recently established translational cancer center with 19 PIs. The center is a joint effort between the Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg and the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Our mission is to understand fundamental mechanisms of tumor development with the long-term goal of improving the care of cancer patients by facilitating new scientific discoveries and translating these into clinical practice. The Center is an important part of the strategic research area Cancer at University of Gothenburg.

Subject area

Cancer genomics

Subject area description

Identification and characterization of fusion oncogenes, driver mutations, and other genomic rearrangements in carcinomas of exocrine glands. Recent studies have unequivocally demonstrated that fusion genes are potent oncogenes that are important as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and as novel therapeutic targets. The aim of the project is to use state-of-the-art NGS- and array-based technologies to identify new fusion oncogenes, mutations, and other oncogenic rearrangements in glandular tumors and to molecularly characterize these and assess their potential as targets for development of new cancer therapies.

Job assignments

The work includes isolation of DNA and RNA, NGS (whole genome, whole exome, and RNA sequencing), array-based CGH, gene expression analyses, bioinformatics, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), CRISPR/Cas9, cell culture, RNAi, and some experimental animal work.

Eligibility

An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Assessment

The successful candidate should have documented previous experience of NGS and bioinformatics and have extensive practical laboratory experience. The candidate should also be highly motivated and have the ability to work independently.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
