Position description
The purpose of the position is to give the employee an early opportunity to develop his or her independence as a researcher and to create the conditions for further acquisitions of qualifications after completing the doctoral degree. The position is a temporary employment of maximum 3 years.

As a PostDoc you will carry out your research in the area of Quantum optimisation and Quantum AI in ATM domain at 100%.

Quantum computing has emerged as a disruptive approach that exploits principles of quantum mechanics to extend the computational capacity of traditional methods. Its capacity to execute highly complex computations at speeds beyond the reach of classical computing offers transformative potential for addressing real-time decision-making challenges. Within the context of Air Traffic Management (ATM), this capability is particularly valuable for tackling NP-hard problems such as large-scale trajectory planning and airspace configuration optimisation, where efficient and timely solutions are critical for ensuring safety, capacity, and sustainability.

In modern air-traffic control, the primary objective of controllers is to ensure safe separation of all aircraft avoiding collisions in a continuously changing three-dimensional airspace. Beyond this safety imperative, controllers must simultaneously optimise for traffic flow, fuel efficiency, regulatory constraints, individual flight performance envelopes and, on occasion, emergency manoeuvres. Every additional consideration shortening routings, simplifying trajectories, adapting to weather or restricted airspace, accommodating aircraft-specific climb or descent rates -multiplies the number of possible conflict-resolution and sequencing choices into an astronomically large decision tree. In fact, the problem being NP-hard, a handful of aircraft is enough to make it unsolvable in polynomial time.

The work requires theoretical studies on the state of the art, together with algorithm development and testing. As a PostDoc, you are expected to develop independent ideas and to communicate research results in oral and written form. The employment includes national and international collaboration and co-production internationally.

Qualification requirements
The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in Quantum Computing or Quantum Information Science.

The applicant must have completed the degree no more than three years before the end of the application period. You have not previously held a position as a postdoctoral researcher in the same or related subject area at MDU that exceeds one year.

You should have knowledge and experience in bridging quantum and classical machine learning, and be fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Assesment criteria
Qualifications that are considered to be a merit for the position are both theoretical and practical knowledge of Quantum optimisation, and Quantum Machine Learning and extensive programming experience, e.g., Qiskit, Python, TorchQuantum tools and packages.

In an overall assessment of suitability, emphasis is also placed on personal abilities. All employees at MDU are expected to cooperate and treat colleagues and students with respect, take responsibility for the organisation and their own work duties and contribute to a positive work environment.

Personal abilities that will be given special emphasis are the ability to work effectively within a team, share ideas and contribute to the group.

We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organisation.
