The postdoc will have significant freedom to shape and develop their own research agenda within the NLP@DSAI group at Chalmers. The position also offers opportunities to be involved in teaching and supervision.
About us
The Computer Science and Engineering department is strongly international, with approximately 300 employees from over 30 countries. The department is fully integrated within Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg. The postdoc position is placed in the Division of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and the employment is with Chalmers University of Technology.
The division's research spans from foundational machine learning theory to applications within several fields. The department provides high-quality education at all levels, offering over 120 courses each year. We also have extensive national and international collaborations with academia and industry.
About the research project
The postdoc will be in the NLP@DSAI group and supervised by Richard Johansson. The postdoc has freedom in designing their research agenda as long as the topic can be aligned with the group's interests. Topics that are of particular interest include:
• Language model interpretability, particularly mechanistic interpretability methods or applications of interpretability in multimodal or reasoning models.
• Evaluation methodologies for generative AI systems, in particular multimodal or reasoning models, and the impact of data on evaluation.
• NLP-based methodologies and applications in computational social science.
The position will be funded by the GATE project, an EU-funded project connecting Chalmers to researchers in Bulgaria. The postdoc will seek to establish collaborations with researchers at the GATE institute in Sofia.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
• A doctoral degree in computer science, computational linguistics, articifial intelligence or a related field, awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline*,
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English,
• A strong publication track record.
• The date on your doctoral degree certificate is considered the official date of completion. Exceptions to the three-year eligibility limit may be made for documented circumstances such as parental leave, sick leave, or military service.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
• Experience of working with modern deep learning frameworks and large language models,
• Experience in any of the three priority areas mentioned above (interpretability, evaluation, or computational social science),
• Experience in teaching and supervision.
What you will do
The postdoc will design a project around a selected focus area and lead the conceptual development and practical implementation. The role also offers opportunities to mentor PhD students, supervise MSc projects, and engage with a national and international collaborators. Practically, the work focuses on
• Conducting independent research in collaboration with the research group
• Publishing and presenting your work at conferences and in journals
• Supervising master's and/or PhD students
• Teaching at undergraduate/Master's level
• Collaborating within academia and with society at large
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.
The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
