Do you want to contribute to groundbreaking and collaborative research on how to design and integrate of technologies into whole systems using MBSE - Model Based Systems Engineering? This is an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral position at the Division of Product Development, Department of Industrial and Materials Science , focused on innovative research in Systems Engineering Design.

About the research project

The position addresses a central research challenge in which design of whole-jet engine systems depend on the characteristics of subsystem materials and manufacturing technologies.

The core scientific challenge is to develop MBSE approaches that can represent and exploit both the opportunities and constraints introduced by advanced materials and manufacturing technologies, with particular emphasis on additive manufacturing. While these technologies enable new design freedoms such as increased functional integration, improved thermal management, and reduced part count they also introduce constraints related to material characteristics, process-induced variability, residual stresses, surface integrity, inspection and qualification requirements, and sustainability. Capturing these effects in whole-engine, system-level models remains an open research problem. Ultimately, MBSE models for conceptual design must be capable of representing system behavior arising from alternative subsystem concepts and architectures.

The postdoctoral researcher will focus on integrating material and manufacturing behavior with mechanical and thermal performance models, manufacturability considerations, and sustainability metrics within a system-of-systems perspective. The work will investigate how physics-based models, reduced-order representations, and datadriven approaches can be combined and embedded in MBSE frameworks to support earlystage architectural decisions, tradeoff analyses, and system validation for small jet engine concepts.

The research will include the development of modeling strategies that connect material properties and manufacturing process parameters including additive manufacturing to component-level behavior and overall engine system performance using state-of-the-art MBSE methods and tools. Particular attention will be given to how manufacturing-enabled design freedoms and constraints propagate through the system architecture, influencing thermal behavior, structural integrity, reliability, cost, and environmental impact across the life cycle.

The position will also address challenges related to model fidelity, uncertainty, design margins, and traceability. This includes representing manufacturing constraints and material behavior in forms suitable for system-level reasoning, and ensuring consistency between detailed simulations, experimental data, and higher-level system models. The researcher is expected to contribute to methodological advances in MBSE that strengthen the integration of multi-physics and manufacturing knowledge into industrially applicable system models.

The position is part of a collaborative research initiative involving Chalmers, GKN Aerospace, and KTH, focused on the development of an experimental jet engine demonstrator for system validation. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with industrial and academic partners, contributing MBSE expertise while grounding the research in practical engineering challenges. Expected outcomes include novel MBSE methodologies, high-quality scientific publications, and contributions to industrial development practices, supporting the development of manufacturable and sustainable small jet engine architectures and long-term competence building in aerospace systems engineering.
