The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.ma.slu.se) has a unique national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to both water chemistry and the aquatic biota. The mission of the department is to provide the knowledge about human impacts on aquatic ecosystems that society needs to achieve its environmental goals for surface waters. This mission involves the design and implementation of long-term surveillance programs across a range of spatial and temporal scales, studies of the chemical and ecological processes underlying environmental change, as well as the knowledge and tools needed to interpret environmental data and assess management alternatives.
Work description: The conservation of biological diversity is an important integral part of regional, national and global environmental goals, as the multiple stressors that act on ecosystems induce a loss of biodiversity. Biological diversity includes species diversity, the diversity of habitats for species, but also the genetic diversity that is a prerequisite for sustainable populations. Much of the focus of conservation biology and bioassessment programs has been on the habitat- and species level diversity, as these have been more easily to quantify than the genetic diversity of populations. Recent development in genetic methodology, however, has opened for the study of genetic diversity populations at various levels of environmental stress. We therefore announce a postdoc position in aquatic ecology/diversity with a research focus on the genetic diversity of inland water populations of invertebrates and/or fish and their relationships to environmental stressors (e.g. chemical stress, hydromorphological alterations).
Applicants should hold a PhD in population ecology, genetics or equivalent. Background in studies of trophic relationships and experience of experimental work with aquatic organisms, including fish, is meriting.
To be appointed as a postdoc, applicants should have been awarded her/his PhD no more than three years ago at the time of application. Applicant awarded a PhD degree more than three years ago can be appointed as a researcher. The position is full-time and will be granted for a period of two years, starting as soon as possible.
SLU is an equal opportunity employer.
