Applications are welcome for a post-doctoral position in Development Economics at the Department of Economics, University of Gothenburg. The position is for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. Its focus is on the performance of the private sector in poor countries. Our department provides a stimulating environment with many young researchers and a rapidly growing research output. We have strong research groups in development, environmental, and behavioral economics. We also have extensive links with leading international experts based at places like the Brookings Institution, the World Bank, University of Oxford, London School of Economics, etc.
Description of work:
Structural change, i.e. the shift of resources from low to high productivity sectors, is a key mechanism for economic growth in poor countries. This requires improved performance of private non-farm companies - higher productivity, more investment, higher employment growth, for example. The Söderberg's Foundation Research Fellow will carry out high-quality research investigating what types of capabilities are required to run a successful enterprise in a developing country. Research in this area may require the use of advanced quantitative techniques as well as case studies. Special attention should be given to the role of globalization and its impact on the constraints and opportunities for firms in developing countries. The Department will encourage involvement in a limited amount of teaching and supervision, the terms of which will be agreed later.
Qualifications:
Applicants should hold a recent PhD in Economics or be close to finishing their thesis. "Recent" usually means three years but parental leave and other circumstances may be taken into account and should be stated in application.
Selection Criteria:
Research potential is our key selection criterion for the advertised position. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out research suitable for publication in leading or highly ranked field and general economics journals. Ability to cooperate and personal suitability are also important criteria.

Interviews and research presentations by shortlisted candidates will be organized in March, in the Department or via a video link. The successful candidate will be expected to take up the position no later than September 1st 2011.
