We work in a interdisciplinary way using quantitative tools and models to analyze policy relevant aspects of the energy system. The successful candidate will have have access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources, as well as a supportive and collaborative research environment. You will have the opportunity to work with leading experts in the field and to collaborate with other researchers both within and outside of the division.
Information about the division and the department
The division of Physical Resource Theory is one of five divisions within the department of Space, Earth and Environment. The Division of Physical Resource Theory offers an interdisciplinary research environment that relies on a range of different scientific methods, from energy system modelling and agent-based modelling, to remote sensing, econometrics and surveys. Our aim is to advance challenge-driven scientific excellence by crossing traditional disciplinary boundaries and increasing the level of cross-collaboration in environmental research and with society at large. The division has around 50 staff members, faculty, and PhD-students with diverse expertise, including engineers, and natural and social scientists. We also offer courses in areas related to our research.
The post-doctoral researcher will have the opportunity to work in one of the following specialized areas:
1) Investigation of the potential of biomass utilization within a renewable energy system. Biomass can be utilized to provide balancing power in a renewable energy system and also has the potential to deliver negative emissions when combined with carbon capture and storage. However, the production of biomass may result in significant carbon emissions depending on the source. The objective of this research project is to investigate the most effective ways of utilizing biomass within a future energy system.
2) Analysis of the relationship between trade, energy security, and renewable-based energy systems. The distribution of renewable energy sources is expected to be more widespread compared to fossil fuels. Nevertheless, some countries may still have better solar and wind resources, raising the question of the impact on geopolitics and trade in a global energy system that relies heavily on renewable resources.
3) Development of robust renewable energy systems. Renewable power systems may face new risks, such as extreme weather events, technical failures of transmission lines or large generators, and geopolitical events. The aim of this research is to design a system that can withstand and mitigate these uncertainties.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large.
Further responsibilities include:
• Developing your own research methodology
• Presenting research findings and writing academic publications.
• Staying updated on developments in your field, and incorporating new knowledge into the project as appropriate.
• Completing other tasks as assigned by the project lead to ensure the success of the project.
Qualifications
We are seeking a highly motivated person with a PhD in energy systems, economics, mathematics, data science or social sciences. To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).
The ideal candidate will both have a strong background in modeling or quantitative analysis and good understanding of the social aspects of energy transitions. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. A strong academic record is expected.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Contract terms
The postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years. The position can be extended to three years. The position may also include up to 20% teaching.
