PhD Student position in the Department of Product and Production Development, Chalmers University of Technology
Reference number 2008/123
Application deadline 2008-09-15
Lean or Mean - Consequences of existing production concepts in Swedish working life.
Job description
Knowledge about Lean Production concepts and their consequences for employees and companies is limited and sometimes even contradictory. This may partly be explained by the differences in the focus individual companies apply on a variety of aspects of the production philosophy. If a company implements a limited number of methods from the Lean philosophy, it may result in other consequences than if the philosophy was implemented as a whole.
The aim of the project is to better understand the consequences of implementing new production concepts, in particular Lean Production. The PhD project consists of three steps:
1. literature review of existing production concepts,
2. case studies in organisations who are implementing Lean production, and
3. development of methods for the assessment of different production concepts incorporating technical and organisational aspects.
The case studies will provide information on Lean implementation processes and the resulting consequences for working conditions and efficiency. The analysis of the resulting work conditions will be focused on potentially conflicting demands between production philosophies and available resources or competence. Such conflicts may result in stress, leading to illness and inefficiency. Important and expected results are industrial examples of good implementations of production concepts with positive results on working conditions.
You will be employed as a doctoral student at the Division of Production Systems, Department of Product and Production Development (PPU) at Chalmers University of Technology. A maximum of 20 % of the working time will be devoted to duties at the department. The remaining time will be devoted to your own research and education.
