It is ideally suited for a candidate with a keen interest in combining mathematical modeling, statistical mechanics and large scale atomistic simulations. The PhD position has a duration of 4 years, with a starting date September 2024.
Project description
The research is part of a project focusing on nanoscale wetting phenomena in two dimensional materials such as graphene, TMDs and related materials. The topic is rich in unexpected results, and creating mathematical models capturing the many complex phenomena is a challenge. While there are interesting fundamental aspects of the research, it also has relevance for applications. These involve phase transitions, nano-devices for use in for instance bio-sensing, nano-fluidics, etc.
Information about the division and the department
The division of Condensed Matter and Materials Theory consists of approximately 30 members, ranging from PhD students to faculty. Our main activities focuses on constructing models and developing an understanding of a large variety of materials and other condensed matter systems, sometimes leading to new materials, novel technological devices, or structured media with properties beyond those occurring naturally. To this end, we combine theoretical, methodological and computational techniques, often in close collaboration with local and international experimental groups. The work in the division is characterized by a strong interplay between fundamental and applied research and this allows us to address pressing societal challenges, e.g., related to sustainable energy or information technology.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as a PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. This includes developing scientific concepts and communicating research results both verbally and in writing. In addition to the research project, you will also take graduate courses within the graduate school of Physics. The majority of your working time will be devoted to your own research and competence development, but you may also be involved in teaching and other departmental duties.
A PhD position at Chalmers is an opportunity to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry.
We offer a competitive salary, excellent working conditions, and access to world-class facilities and infrastructure.
