The Department of Crop Production Ecology is part of the Ecology Centre and together with the Department of Ecology, it offers a stimulating research environment in Uppsala. We provide education and perform research on plants for food, animal feed, and energy. The research and teaching focus strongly on agricultural crop production and its interaction with the surrounding environment. The research programmes address how different production methods, cultivation environments, and systems influence yields and other ecosystem services, as well as product quality and the surrounding environment. We teach about crop production, plant ecology, eco-physiology, weed biology, and crop production systems in an ecological sustainability context.

Development of more nutrient efficient spring wheat in a science - industry partnership
Are you searching for a PhD project in which you, together with colleagues from a Swedish plant breeding company, will contribute to developing new wheat varieties for a more sustainable agriculture? Do you thrive in a multidisciplinary and international research environment? Then this PhD position in the research education subject biology at the Department of Crop Production Ecology, SLU Uppsala should be of interest to you.

Spring wheat is frequently grown in Sweden to produce bread-making flour, and varieties with improved nutrient use efficiency especially in Swedish conditions are wanted by Swedens' only commercial cereal breeder Lantmännen Lantbruk. A partnership has been established between the breeding company, expertise in crop science, soil science and genetics at SLU, and stakeholders. Candidate phenotypic traits indicating improved nutrient use efficiency are being identified and parental cultivars for development of a mapping population are being selected in our current activities. The proposed research will continue this collaboration, with the overall aim to take the first necessary step in identifying genetic markers for the increased application of marker-assisted breeding by the breeding company on basis of phenotyping in field and genotyping of a newly developed mapping population. The specific objectives include the development of a genetic mapping population; phenotyping of two field trials of the same mapping population; genotyping and identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with candidate traits indicating aspects of nutrient use efficiency, for marker-assisted breeding. As a PhD student within this project, you will have the opportunity to develop your networks within academy and the agribusiness. Your work will include field and possibly also greenhouse experiments, as well as data processing and writing.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have a background in biology or agronomy with sound knowledge of plant ecology and plant breeding, and with interest in agriculture and crop production. Experience of field work is a merit. Good skills in English (both written and oral) is required as well as to communicate (understand and speak), or being willing to learn, Swedish or another Scandinavian language. Particular emphasis will be placed on your personal skills as team player as well as your ability to take initiatives and work independently. You need to have a driving license.
