hela Sverige Mid Sweden University has more than 20,000 students and has campuses in Härnösand, Sundsvall and Östersund. We offer 50 general programmes, 30 Master?s programmes and 750 courses in a wide range of fields; we are also a major player in distance and net-based education. Mid Sweden University has an annual turnover of SEK 845 million and has more than 900 employees, of which 70 are professors and 200 are research students. Research profiles are forest as a resource and mountain regions, within the two thematic areas of Business and Growth and Quality of Life and Welfare.
Mid Sweden University welcomes applications for the post of PhD Student in Physics of Complex Materials at the Department of Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Ref. no. MIUN 2012/638
Subject area
This project concerns modelling and simulation of time-dependent, stochastic failure of materials and structures. Materials often fail, unexpectedly, at varying times under the fluctuating conditions of relatively low-level of mechanical and environmental stresses. Such failure is ubiquitous in many engineering materials and structures. The underlying mechanism is the nonlinear evolution of damages or healing in a micro scale, and the propagation of these in larger scales through highly coupled, hierarchical structures. The problem also has extreme resemblance to life time of biological systems, and it resides in the intersection of statistical mechanics, complexity theory, biophysics, and materials science. This complex system behaviour is not only of scientific interest, but also of practical significance. A specific context of this project is life time of fibre-based materials and their structures.
The candidate is expected to perform analytical/numerical modelling in a close collaboration with an experimental project of the same subject. The work may include, but is not limited to, the investigation of fundamental damage evolution law and complex behaviour, and the development of stochastic failure models using discrete element and/or finite element formulations.
Qualifications
The candidates must hold a Bachelor or Master degree of physical sciences, with a strong background in mathematics and physics. Strong communication skills are another requirement. Prior work experience is considered to be an asset.
Place of work
The post is based in the city of Sundsvall, a university town located in the geographical centre of Sweden, offering comfortable life and numerous nature attractions. It is also the home land of forest-product-related industries and their research centres.
