Mid Sweden University welcomes applications for the post of
PhD Student in Physics of Complex Materials at the Department of Applied Sciences and Design

Ref. no. MIUN 2012/1636

Subject area:
This project concerns modelling and simulation of time-dependent, stochastic failure of materials and structures. Materials often fail, unexpectedly, at varying times under the fluctuating conditions of relatively low-level of mechanical and environmental stresses. Such failure is ubiquitous in many engineering materials and structures, and also has extreme resemblance to life time of biological systems. The underlying mechanism is the nonlinear evolution of damages or healing in a micro scale, and the propagation of these in larger scales through highly coupled, hierarchical structures. The problem resides in the intersection of statistical physics, complexity theory, biophysics, and materials science. This complex system behaviour is not only of scientific interest, but also of practical significance. A specific context of this project is life time of fibre-based materials and their structures.

The candidate is expected to perform analytical/numerical modelling in a close collaboration with an experimental project of the same subject. The work may include, but is not limited to, the investigation of fundamental damage evolution law and complex behaviour of fibre network, and the development of stochastic failure models using discrete element and/or finite element formulations.

Qualifications:
The candidates must hold a master or bachelor degree of physical sciences, equivalent to 240 ETCS credits of which at least 60 credits must be for advanced courses and at least 90 credits in mathematics and physics. (For the admission criteria consult http://www.doktorandhandboken.nu ) Strong communication skills are another requirement. Prior work experience is considered to be an asset.

Place of work and environment: The post is based in the city of Sundsvall, a university town located in the geographical centre of Sweden. It is also the home land of forest-product industries and their research centres. We engage in an uncompromising pursuit of excellence but in an intimate and pleasant atmosphere.

Starting date: Immediate.
