Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We need you here. We look forward to receiving your application!

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology conducts research and offers education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Research, the predominant activity, is often done in collaboration with corporate and international partners. We are one of the university's largest, oldest and most well known departments, encompassing five interacting scientific fields: biology, chemistry, material physics, applied physics and theory and modelling.

LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY
Hereby advertises a position as

PhD student in Non-fullerene organic solar cells
formally based at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM)

Duties
The PhD candidate will focus on understanding charge generation, recombination, and extraction of non-fullerene OSCs, aiming to provide guidance for the rational design of donor / acceptor materials for further enhanced efficiency.

Organic solar cells (OSCs) are based on semiconducting carbon-based materials, which absorb visible light and transform the solar energy into electrical energy. Compared with the commercial silicon solar cells, OSCs have unique advantages. For example, they can be manufactured through low-cost printing technologies (organic semiconductors can be dissolved in organic solvents and thus used as ink); they can be made semi-transparent with selectable colors which can be used architecturally in building integration, thus delivering both aesthetic and environmental benefits; OSCs have a shorter energy payback time compared with other solar cells technologies (energy needed for production of OSCs is available after six months of use under typical sunlight conditions in northern Europe).

OSCs were traditionally limited by their relatively low efficiency (around 10%). However, the situation has now significantly changed during the past few years, with a high power conversion efficiency over 17% reported very recently. The key reason for this significant improvement is due to the application of non-fullerene acceptor materials. In spite of rapid progress of in the device efficiencies of non-fullerene OSCs, little is known on the device physics and photophysics of this new type of solar cells.

The group of Dr. Feng Gao, funded by the ERC Starting Grant, is a young and fast-growing research group. The group is currently working on non-fullerene OSCs and also perovskite optoelectronics. By closely collaborating with chemistry groups, we have demonstrated that first non-fullerene OSCs with power conversation efficiencies above 10% (see our paper in Advanced Materials and highlight in Nature). In addition, we have shown that non-fullerene OSCs can work efficiently with negligible energetic offset between donor and acceptor materials (see our paper in Nature Energy and Nature Materials). For more details, please refer to our review paper in Nature Materials.

As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.

Qualifications
The applicant has to have or soon to have finished a Master in Science or equivalent in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry or equivalent. It is an advantage to have prior experimental experience of what is described in the Job description above - in particular, semiconductor physics, organic semiconductors, or solar cells. Good skills in spectroscopy and/or programming (PythonMatlab, LabView or similar) would be favorable.

Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.

Appointment time
The position is for four years. The first appointment will be for a maximum of one year. The appointment can be extended by maximum two years at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years ' full time research training.

Starting date
By agreement.
